I wonder how would it looked if you have made another exposure for the "wings" and stack the two of them. Or use a real background not a backdrop like a tree bark...but nevermind, it would have ended in a totaly different concept. 

Is it dead ? Where do you find such great specimen ? Behind the fridge ?! :)

There might be predators below them so they try to escape them by jumping into the air.

If I may, I suggest you to take a tent, find a place to stay there for some days, find the places where they usually swim (after some time you will see a pattern), you could also throw some bread there to allure them in the same place and before shooting try focusing on the ripples. As close you get to them the better the image will be.

Thank you Martin & Tore ! I opened a bottle of champagne when I read your comments :) I was so sure it will go unnoticed. I was ( at least ) reticent to post my photos on photo.net...

Image was taken in a crowded shooting spot with hundreds of tourists all around me; luckily I have a 400mm lens to escape them :=) Picture was not cropped - I wish I would have tried the golden ratio composition...only if I would had enough time...
