Dave,

Let me ask this question. If I am using my OC 1100 cable will the TTL function be utilized to its maximized capabilities?
With my EBAY triggers, I always have set the flashes on manual mode, but for some reason I am not able to dial them in to provide the proper power. Sometimes I will okay results with 1/4 to 1/8 power while in doors and 1/2 to 1/4 power while outdoors so I have decided the allow the camera to manage the proper light power.
Thanks

I am looking to play with some off camera flash setups and would like to utilize the TTL capabilities. I would like to purchase the following (OC-1100 and OS1100).

My question is this, how will this option affect my sync speed. With the 500si the max sync speed is 1/60 – 1/45 or will I have the ability to set my sync speed to 1/90 on a manual setting.

Hello Matt,
I did the DIY beauty dish setup and I picked up the mirror from my auto parts store. I was able to locate several different sizes (convex) that is, with no issue.
By the way, it does give the finished product a well finished look.
Love to see what you do with it...

Thanks -

You are correct, I use the 5600 as the master and 3600 as the slave. I will be on the lookout for a used 5400hs. Thanks

Can I get someone to give me a honest review on the following flash unit (Quantaray QBX-8000XI). I am looking to replace my 3500xi flash unit due to a broken hot shoe mount. I am working on flash technique and with my 3500xi non-operational I would like to replace it with something with a little more power.
My setup: Minolta 500si body; Tamron 28 - 80mm 3.5:5 lens w/ UV filter; Sigma 70 - 300mm 4:5 lens w/UV filter; Minolta 5600hs w/stand; Minolta 3500xi w/stand (BROKEN).

I will not return the kit; however I’m keeping the stand and umbrella. I will invest in another stand and umbrella to use with my Minolta 3500xi and Minolta 5400hs flash units. I will have to locate the hot-shoe mounts for the stand and possible some wireless triggers. Thanks a bunch…

I have been working with my manual settings on the DSLR and I still use my film slr (Minolta 500si) on Full Auto / Portrait Mode and some of the photos come out great minus my light issue. I capture these settings and try to recreate with my Sony and I get something totally different. I will keep pressing forward. Thanks

I recently purchased a ‘Portrait Studio Lighting Kit Light stand. The kit came with the following:

1 x light stand able to extend to 7 feet
1 x 45watt Background light 5500k
1 x 32" translucent umbrella
1 x AC Swivel adapter / umbrella holder translucent

My setup was as follows:

In a controlled area (my garage) with my light kit 3.5’ to 4’to the right and slightly in front, extended 5’ to 6’ high with my umbrella at a 45 degree down angle, shooting thru the umbrella towards my subject (a full figured mannequin).

I took a few test shots with the one light setup (no other lights) and I was not getting enough light on the subject. I was shooting in full auto with P setting (Sony A330). So my question is this.

Would it be better for me to purchase a stronger wattage bulb, like a bright white 100W Incandescent Equivalent/1600 Lumens. 23 Watt, 120-Volt Bright White CFL Bulb with the following specs:

Finish - Bright White

CRI - 82

Color Temp - 5000K

Will this resolve my issue?

To all,
I will be trying some of these techniques in a few days and I will post the results - Please let me know what you think - Thanks for the great direction -

Vick,
Do you a have a particular light meter you would recommend? “Yes” you are correct, Minolta 35mm (film) and a Sony A330.

Lex,
What types of reflective surfaces have you used in the past to capture the lighting you are seeking?

-

Matt L.
Yea, I am very mindful of the fire hazard when using these lights and I keep ALL material at least 2 to 3 feet away from the set. I have tried the translucent shower curtain and for some reason the output am some what yellowish. I did not think about reflecting it off a white surface. I have just the thing to try this method. I am also going to try the cotton bed sheet.
Yes the dimmer switches are rated at 600 watts. I have two lamps at 500 watts each the two dimmer switches are rated at 600 watts each. Thanks for the info...

I have devised a DIY light kit out of a 1000 watt garage worklight set from HD. I have added a dimmer on each light to somewhat control the output. Even on the softest setting, I want to control the softeness much more. Can I get some ideas as far as material to place over my lights to diffuse?

C.F. - Thanks for the link - Great example and explains a lot -

Hal Bradbury - You are correct, I have seen little difference with my old point and shot compared to me DSLR, however, I have only had my DSLR for a month and a half and only able to shot on the weekends. I will get to know my camera.

Rob Bernhard - I purchased my DSLR to have a bit more control over my options and I picked it up for a great price.

Thanks to all for the great advice, comments and questions. I see I am going to learn a lot from this site...

-

Okay, I see the difference with the focal length. I have been using the incorrect lens for certain shots. "Yet to see the difference", yes you are correct, it is in the color and the sharpness.

-

Please explain the difference with wide angle, zoom and telephoto...
I have moved from a Sony Cyber point and shot to my first DSLR (Sony A330 L) with the following lens setup (18 - 55 standard zoom, Sigma 70 -300 macro zoom). Purchased the body from http://www.usedcameras.com for an outstanding price.
I have yet to see the difference between the two types of lenses. I have shot nature shots and people (public) with both lenses and I can not tell the difference. Please clue me in.
I have been at this hobby for a little over a 1 year. It seems I have taken better photos with my Cyber than the current cofiguration I now have. I problem need to take a class of some sort, please educate me.
Thanks -
