1.
Besides eBay which service do you use to buy and sell used gear? I tried this one, but there is not much of activity here. Plus the raiting system is close to non existense. Also tried APUG and CL with similar results.
Please share your expereince. I prefer to buy a used equipment from an individual, not from a retailer. For instance, for my 35mm and DSLR needs I use 'fredmiranda' with great results.

 2.
As it was already mentioned you need to set the aperture on the lens to the smallest value to allow the camera to control the whole range of the diaphragm settings. The lock button is only needed to prevent an accidental move of the aperture ring. If the diaphragm is being controlled by rotating the aperture ring your F5 will continue metering just fine regardless, but the camera will not be setting the diaphragm. The F5 will indicate that fact by displaying 'f--' at the bottom of the viewfinder, but you would be able to see the actual value in the direct-readout window at the top. This is a very nice feature to have.
To auto focus you would need to set the lever on the camera, below the lens release button, to S or C mode.
Hope it helps. The actual F5 manual is freely available in PDF format if you happen not to have one.

 3.
Jim, I like the idea. In fact it is cleaner then the current functionality, which I find cumbersome and anti-intuitive. Having the EV locked in Manual mode is also important, it would allow adjusting the settings faster while keeping the chosen EV intact. Hit the button again and you are back on your own.
The only concern is the naming of the button/functionality. EV-L might soon be pronounced as EViL. If this was not intentional initially, it can be changed by transposing one letter: L-EV.
4.
Staying on topic, I believe that the DX mode was added to a d3 and a d700 to give you an opportunity to utilize your DX lenses when necessary. I do not see any reason to use this mode with a regular size lens, at least I've never used it and I wouldn't miss it if it suddenly disappears from the settings. It is just a crop.

 5.
Try another lens to see if you can duplicate the problem. I had sticky blades on my 50 f/1.2 and had to replace it eventually. It might not be the camera to blame.
