1.
I was on the same situation as you a couple of months ago.I was looking for walk-around lens. Never had a non-Canon lens before. My first choice was the Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 but was the cost was a big factor. I finally went for Tamron 17-50 with VC. It's now my favorite walk-around lens and is mounted on my camera 90% of the time. The extra money allowed me to buy the Canon S90, and which by far, is my favorite point and shoot cam an is with me everyday (in my pocket or in my car).
By the way, there's a $70 rebate for the Tamron lens right now , so it's the best time to buy.

 2.
Funny that you brought up this issue. I noticed the same underexposed pictures with my 7D too. Just like you, I took shots with my T1i and T1i gave the right exposure than the 7D (same condition). Heck, even my S90 gives better exposure (when shot in automatic exposure).

 3.
I would like to know if it's worth purchasing an insurance for a camera. I just purchased a Canon 7D at Best Buy (lucky me!) and I also purchased an insurance that covers accidental drop, spill, and lens cleaning. The price was $375 for four years. After purchasing it, I sort of have a buyer's remorse because that's a lot of money! Any opinion is appreciated.
