1.
A specimen quality Herkimer Diamond. Thanks to a co-worker who has quite an extensive minerals collection, I am able to use my new light box and 105mm Macro lens. When shooting minerals, lighting is everything and I have a lot to learn.
I look forward to more mineral samples and improving my skill with the 105mm.

00aCLB-453525584.jpg.ee7c97b38070f18a4c0114f57324cb81.jpg

 2.
We held a photowalking activity at The Leonardo in downtown Salt Lake City. The Leonardo is a science and art museem and has a lot of interesting shapes and textures to photograph. My congtribution was of some art work hanging above the DNA exhibit on the second floor. I did remove hanging wires and some light fixtures in the background to give the hoops a feeling of being suspended in the air.

00ZvBJ-436531684.jpg.6c45ada7eea41d19960e7d42dad87707.jpg

 3.
Some of my favorites are....
Chris Court - Great capture. The blue smoke is a nice element in the photo. I also like your copyright Chris tag :)
Shun Cheung - I like the blue ocean background in this photo. It must be nice in San Diego this time of year. If you could only find 7 more pelicans you could attach them to Santa's sleigh and give the reindeer a break.
Jeannean - Wow! What a great portrait of your nephew. I really like how it turned out in black and white.
Robert Davidson - Very nicely done macro. The orange and yellow flower reflected in the water drop is a nice addition.

 4.
Spent time last week with the Photowalking Utah crowd on Temple Square in Salt Lake City taking photos of the lights. We had a group of about 40 photographers and luckily it was in the mid 30s and not the teens that we had last year for a temperature.

00ZnD0-428401584.jpg.10111caaa85ea2492bcc4a5896fc7cca.jpg

 5.
This light art was part of the World Wide Photowalking event last Saturday. The group I joined met at the Great Salt Lake just west of Salt Lake City, Ut. This was my last photo of the night and I wasn't quite prepared for it, but still pleased with how it came out.

00ZQVu-404241584.jpg.3f820b49af417519c258cc00c7a32517.jpg

 6.
I don't have anything ready to contribute today, but wanted to make a few comments on some of my favorites.
Lionel Linton - Very well composed and I really like the lighting in your still life.
Bob Dein - Really like the portrait. Your choice to make this B and W draws more attention to the face as well as the DOF.
Roberta Davidson - Nice macro. I love the color in the Anole photo. A 105mm macro is on my lens wish list.
Ilkka Nissila - The bubble is so in focus. That must have been difficult. You gotta love the little boy running to blow up the bubble. Nice job.
As usual there are other photos I really enjoyed, but did not have the room to comment

 7.
Another picture from our family camping trip to Payson Lakes a couple of weeks ago. This was taken early in the morning at Big East Lake before the fisherman and swimmers had taken over the peace and quiet.

00ZAXo-388351584.jpg.78ebda159dfdf5238ba3d5628cfee5da.jpg

 8.
Last weekend my family and I went camping at the Payson Lakes Campground about 12 miles outside of Payson, Utah. Payson Lakes is a collection of three small lakes and is a very popular family campgournd because it is so close to Provo and Salt Lake City.
This photo is of Box Lake about a half mile from the campground and not quite as crowded as Big East Lake which is only 100 yards from the campground area. I used three photos to get this picture using the PSE8 Photomerge Exposure feature. I was really pleased with how it turned out.
There was hardly any breeze at all which helped in getting a very still shot of the trees near the shore. But there was just enough water movement between the shots to give the reflections of the trees a nice soft blur.

00Z8My-385895584.jpg.d6110ac0ba542ee2c58858500f57006d.jpg

 9.
A few of my favorites this week are
Robert Wayt - I agree that the lines and the colors make this a beautiful photo
Ray House - Nicely shot. I like how the flash created a contrast between the foreground and the background.
Ray RG - Converting your HDR to B/W really works for me. Very surreal.
Aquinaldo de Paula - Beautiful. Now I have the urge to photoshop myself into this scene and enjoy the sunshine. Unfortunatley the only time I have been to Rio was at 2:00am in the morning on a layover many years ago.

 10.
It has been a few months since I have made a contribution to Nikon Wednesday. It felt good to get my camera out and take a short hike up the canyon.
My wife and I hiked part of the Red Pine Lake Trail up Little Cottonwood Canyon on the Wasatch Front. This photo was shot at the 1 mile junction point of the hike which splits the trail into two different hikes. I took about 20 pictures here adjusting exposure and shutter speeds and this is the photo I liked the best.

00Z6K3-383847584.jpg.b026de9b326c10fbf2c1362c9517f0ac.jpg

 11.
Took a short hike to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Front. A very popular family hike to the falls which in total are about 30 feet tall. This is a small section of the falls I was able to get real close to.

00XR0U-287971584.jpg.ea9496d79a710ac2b5cc7e041b4b0a9d.jpg

 12.
Knowing the harvest moon is a couple of days away, I experimented last night with some shots of the moon. Here was my best attempt. I was pretty pleased with the results considering it was shot at 105mm and I had to crop it down quite a bit. Someday I hope to purchase a 300mm for better moon shots.

00XLCh-283283584.jpg.ae1c02345b5df2c64bbab32d8fc67a07.jpg

 13.
I took my first trip to Yellowsone National Park last week and had a great time taking photos. the picture I am submitting today is looking down the Canyons from the Lower Falls. It was about 2:00pm and partly cloudy. The sun came out behind a cloud and the rainbow that resulted was a pleasent surprise.
Really enjoyed the trip, but now I have abour four hundred and fifty photos to process. Can't wait to go back again.

00X69o-270247684.jpg.18a57753d738eff2aa8418cd5157a010.jpg

 14.
Richard Karash - Nice sunset. I really like the wispy coulds and how the orange color in the lower right gradually turns into blue in the upper left corner.
John Farrar - I agree with an earlier comment that it looks like a piece of art.
Georg S - You really pulled this off, even in difficult lighting.
Last Saturday our photowalkingutah group met at the Union Station in Ogden, Ut to take some pictures. We had a really good turnout and the lighting was excellent during the two hours we walked around the station.
I was really pleased with how this turned out in color. But I decided to change the hue/saturation to give it more of an amber look and it helped some of the details under the train stand out a bit more.

 15.
Matt Brennan - Beautiful "cloudscape". Very well done.
Greg Jones - The orange plumage sure is striking on the flamingos.
Jonan Fjellstett - This BW of a bridge turned out nicely. I really like the how the sun is backlighting the photo.
Tim Holte - Well done portrait.
My youngest daughter was married last Friday. I took this photo of her posing for our photographer and other family members outside of the church. What caught my eye on this photo was the groom leaning back casually trying to stay out of the way. Probably a good move on his part!
It had snowed a little during the morning and some snow flakes show up in the picture. The photographer was using a D90 for this shoot.

 16.
My boss and I were in St George, UT last week and we both brought our cameras with us. Unfortunately his brand of camera doesn't qualify him to post here so I will share one of my photos.
This is the LDS temple in St George, UT and I took this about 7:30 at night. With no visible moon at this time of night the very black background helped bring out the white on the outside of the temple. I took a number of other photos from different angles as well. If you would like to see them here is the link.
Jana Hughes - Really like your picture of the trees.
Erik Christensen - Great portrait
Bill J Boyd - What a wonderful picture. I really like the color of the lake in the background. It helps accentuate the egret.

00V6LI-194517684.jpg.4d71c6b2bf7a6045a23b84fa6b8515aa.jpg

 17.
Last Thursday I had the day off and I noticed that the colors on the Wasatch Front were looking extroidinary that day. I grabbed my camera and headed to the Bell Canyon Trail Head, which is only 5 minutes from my house and started hiking to the lower reservoir.
It was a very fruitful photowalk. I took this photo at about 9:30am just as the sun was cresting over the mountains and lighting up the west side where I was at. The backlighting gives this shot some added depth. I named it "A Peaceful Place"

00Uo1a-182301584.jpg.574c98a729bce7d89520f8da9f58dc5f.jpg

 18.
Last Saturday I ventured out to the Great Salt Lake to take some landscape shots. The clouds provided some beautiful shadows on the terrain and there was some quality light still at mid-morning.
After my first stop I travelled down I-80 a couple of miles to a view area to get a different angle of the lake and Antelope Island in the background. As I was preparing to take some more photos I noticed that the Union Pacific was coming from the northwest right into my frame. I took a number of pictures as it passed by and was very pleased with some of the results. I picked my favorite one to post today. The train made for a much more interesting shot of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island.
Gary - Nice twinkle picture. Very well framed.
Sjoerd - Your roller coaster photo caught my eye and I was drawn right down the track.
Matt - Very nicely composed photo with puppy and breeder. You really captured a moment.
Dieter - Wow! Nice action
Ertugrul - Beautiful picture. I love photos that share ones culture.
There were many other nice photos. I just set a limit to comment on five of them.

00UkAR-180320284.jpg.76cdb8c052f3804eb2e880869fff3370.jpg

 19.
Last weekend I spent some time at the Great Salt Lake to work on my landscape skills. At one point I stopped at a view area off of I-80 to get another angle of the lake with Antelope Island in the background.
As I was framing my shot I noticed that about a mile northwest the Union Pacific was coming towards me right into my picture. I took quite a few pictures as the train passed by and was very pleased with the results. I picked my favorite to post today. I believe the train made for a much more interesting picture. The Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island make up the background.
