Update: Just Bought the 35mm /f1.8 AF-S DX. Many thanks to everyone who help me with this very special purchase. I really enjoyed the discussion and want to say a special thank you to all of the new fathers / photographers who gave me some really good insight to how the lighting will be.

To try to return the favor I know lots of people are hunting down this lense for purchase. www.cameralandny.com seems to have lots in stock. I hope this helps some of you.

I will post some pictures for some feed back as soon as able.

Which is technicalily better -- the Nikkor 35mm/f1.8 AF-S DX or the 50mm f1.4 AF-S. If I am going to spend the money I might as well get something the is really a "Best in Class".

Are there pro and cons for each one with regard to Portraits?

Great thank guys. I know why everybody said to get the D90 over the D5000 (For the ability to use less expensive lens). Still not a huge deal. I will pick up the 35mm tomorrow at B&H. I really do not know how to use a speed flash I am worried I will wash out the pictures? One other question -- Is there much difference between the 50mm and the 35mm other than auto focus? And don't they make a 50mm AF-S? Second Question -- No Filter needed... Third Question -- Other than ISO@ 1600 is there any other idea's -- Want background smoothed and baby sharp. Thank you,

Hello Everyone,

I am expecting a baby in a few days. I have just purchased a D5000 w/ 18-105 VR Lens for my wife. I would however like to take pictures with the camera during or I should say after the birth in the hospital room. I do not wish to use a flash (Might hurt the baby eyes). Can anyone setup the best equipment and settings for me to use and purchase to take pictures in the hospital. Best lens for the job? Best settings in the camera? Best filter if any?

Hello Everyone,

I am having a difficult time finding out what the maximum speed the D5000 can write to its SDHC card. I do not want to purchase a ScanDisk Card that has more transfer speed than my camera, because that would be a waste of money? Could someone give me an idea of which SD Card would work best and not exceed its abilities?

I could not find any entry on the forum, I hope this is not a repeat question.

True... very true -- She liked the idea of video for the baby. But very good idea. I was going to wait 6 months to see if an updated mid range (Upgraded D90) comes out. What do you think?

First I would like to thank everyone for all of their time and effort in helping me select the most appropriate camera for myself and my wife. I took some time yesterday to go relook at each camera.

The D5000 size is great for my wife but a little small for my larger hands but not unusable. The weight I have to say was a plus for my wife and a non issue for me. With regard to the non-pro-consumer abilities of the D5000, Lower metering matrix, AF-MultiCam 1000, No weather Seal, I am just not sure at this stage that my wife will notice nor for that matter myself.

After reading everyone’s posts I started to look at the D90, it fits very nicely between the D5000 and the D300s. My thought is if I am not going to buy the D300s because size and weight with regard to my wife then I should just buy the smallest and lightest camera for her and buy myself a pro-consumer camera next year when our baby will be walking, maybe they will have made an ever better D90 By then or even a D400.

Wow -- that is alot a cameras. So what you are saying is that you are not happy with the D5000 which uses the Mutli-Cam 1000. You rather take the D300s?

Thank you everybody on getting back with me I will try to address each response just to clarify my understanding. Kent Staubus I was leaning toward the D300s because it has the video function like the D5000 but with auto focus. I thought this might help in filming my wife and kid and I did not want to buy a video camera. With that in mind do you think weight is not a concern? (Instead of two items to lug around I just have one) 2nd Response I agree Kent with what you said but do you not find any advantage in what the D300s has to offer over an entry level camera. Shun Cheung I was wondering when you handle your D5000 do you sometimes hit the selector pad with your palm therefore changing the focus points by mistake? I think this would get annoying and make for some bad photos. 2nd response: You made a good suggestion with D90, when you say not a good as the D90 with regard to the AF system does this come into play when taking normal day to day shots (Not Fast Action)? Matt Laur I guess the same question that I posed to Mr. Cheung with regard to the D5000 controls -- do you sometimes hit the selector pad with your palm therefore changing the focus points by mistake? The reason I ask this is that you believe that the D5000 is impossibly small. I felt that way to but that could be just my lack of experience and lack of understanding on the correct way to hold a camera. Robert Hopper I checked out the weight of your F4 (1,200 gram), wow really heavy. At this point anything would feel light. I would not think weight should play a role but I am buying this for the use and not to sit in the bag. Do you think the weight would make my wife less likely to use it? After all I will be at work while she will be taking photos – trip I will handle and should not be a problem. Andrew Lynn I looked into the D90. What would I be losing if I went with the D90 over the D300s other than auto focus on the video? Are there huge differences that I will not realize until I start to get proficient with DSLR’s or are the D300s options way past anything that I would ever attempt? Wouter Willemse Do you use your D300 on a daily basis? Do you think that I would be wasting what the D300s has to offer with 18-105VR Lens? Also, can someone compare Low Light Ability with each Camera D5000, D90 and D300s with the 18-105 VR lens. I wish to take pictures using no flash whenever possible. Hello,

I know this question has been asked and asked... and yes I have read every thread on this forum I could find. My question has to do with Controls and Weight with regard to the D5000 and D300s with a Nikkor 18-105 VR Lens. I know these cameras are hugely different in these two categories but please stay with me on this.

First let me explain I am not a beginner in taking photos with a DSLR, I am by no means a professional either, nor have I owned a good camera in several years. I understand Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO and how they relate to the result I think I want. I am now expecting a baby and I was was interested in getting a great camera for obvious reasons. Also, I should point out that my wife will be using this from time to time to take pictures of our baby. Price is not a concern I will be using points to get either camera.

I know by reading several of the other threads regarding "which camera should I buy" that the camera does not make a great photo -- it's lens and of course talent. Here are the questions:

1) For day to day shooting I know that the D5000 is more then enough, but after reading some of the reviews I have concerns for the following:

a) If you have some knowledge about cameras does the D5000 menu systems get in the way with regard to changing shutter speed and Apertures easily and quickly? Will I enjoy the controls of the D300s better?

b) If you have large hands does the D5000 size become a factor with regard to hitting the selector pad by mistake (changing focus points when you do not want to)? I believe this camera does not have a selector Lock.

c) When using the 18-105 VR Lens with the D5000 does balance of the camera become an issue with taking pictures?

d) For day to day shooting does the D300s weight really become a factor? Meaning, are you less likely to bring the camera out with you because of the weight? I know this is a subjective question but since I will not be holding this camera for long periods I did not think this would bother me (or my wife), but I would like to hear from the avid photographers to see what they have experienced with this camera.

In closing, I have been to the camera store several times to feel out all the above concerns. As some of you can appreciate, itis very hard to tell until you use the camera for extended periods.
