Greetings,
My first camera, a Nikkormat FTn, is in pretty decent shape, but
she needs a good CLA (and foam). The is also a minor (I assume)
problem where the shutter speed viewfinder display is out of sync
with the setting lever.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a reliable repair facility
(preferably on the east coast)? Nikon USA and Abilene Camera Repair
are probably both out for time reasons (Abilene is quoting about 12
weeks!), but I'd like someone reliable with a good rep since this
camera was my first. Any reasonable suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
-Peter

dead pixel
in Nikon
I disagree that you are "SOL". While most companies will allow for a certain number of dead pixels on an LCD, any dead spots on a CCD are unacceptable and you should push Nikon for a replacement while you are in warranty. While, due to the moving lens design of the 885, it certainly is possible that it is dust (would generally appear softer-edged than the sharp appearance of a dead pixel), I would still let Nikon deal with it. -
I love this lens as well and would add that a bright flashlight is often helpful when focusing in the dark field of a stopped-down lens.
I would not do this with most creatures, but flowers, etc. work well. Clamp (or even rubber band) the light to your tripod and you won't need to grow a third arm, though I wouldn't discourage it :-)
I once jerry-rigged a very simple foot-operated on/off switch so I wouldn't have to take my hands off the camera/lens to turn off the light to shoot/meter, etc.

A New "Digital" DX Series Lens w/ a Smaller Image Circle
in Nikon
Posted
This is certainly a temporary fix, and I suspect that this is NOT going to lead to a whole series of "DX" lenses (though I'd welcome a 180-degree DX fisheye!). If priced reasonably, however, I suspect this lens would sell quite well. This is most welcome fix at the wide angle end, and I'm sorry they didn't do this sooner (would have been on my holiday want list).
I've always wondered, however, why someone couldn't come out with a 0.7x converter that would sit between lens and camera and would refocus the image circle onto the smaller CCD area, thus preserving the view angle of standard lenses.
