1.
The 40D has a 1.6 lens multiplier and so does the 7D. It comes down to what you are using the camera for. If you need the multiplier for longer shots, the 7D adds distance to all lens. If you use more for close shots such as portraits and macro, the 5D may be a better choice (also more expensive). The 1080p on both cameras is a big plus. I also own a 40D and thinking about buying the 7D with the 5D a close second. Let your future needs be your guide. If I do get the 7D, my next choice will be a 1:1 camera from Canon.

 2.
I have an auto focus problem with 50mm 1.4 lens when shooting close portraits. It is just a small turn out of focus but noticeable when zoomed in. It will focus on manual clearly but can't understand why it stops out of focus in auto. Is there something I can do to adjust focus?

 3.
I use Canon speedlights 580ex and 550ex as main and fill and they seem to work well shooting through umbrellas in the 6-8 ft range, which is about the size of my small studio. I was wondering if anyone has had experence shooting with speedlights in an open area or in the 10ft + range for family shots or groups? Some people seem to think with 2 quality speedlights you can cover most any situation that requires flash. I'm trying to find a combination that is easy to transport and setup for site portraits and photography.
