1.
even though they are bugs, they are part of the system... and they are also living beings, moreover, if you are taking photographs of them, they are the main subject, without which you would not be able to create that specific project on hand... so as a photographer i would respect them as i respect a human in terms of while photographing them.

 2.
photography depends on you, however, formal education opens several avenues, like you will have some friends and teachers or guide to guide you through the steps, moreover, there will be real-life critique... in school, they also teach you the history which is good to learn.. moreover, there are classes which teach you the business side of it too... and you can get internships through school which is a great way of experiencing first hand... however, even if you go to a photography school, if you are not too good or passionate..
so first it is passion and the eye for photography.. then if you have formal education, it is a plus

 3. as you have said that you live in pa.. dont know what part exactly you live in pa.. but there are some great schools if you live around phili... or even pittsburgh... the art institute is a great one... also there is temple university in phili... or if you live around that area.. and if you are willing to travel 100 miles, steve mccurry has opened up a studio near phili... so who else can be better than him if you want mentoring... i dont know if he does one-to-one mentoring... but if he does, he is amazing
 4.
The lens that comes with the rebel, i mean the 18-55mm one is not so fast, and you never know about how the light condition would be inside the room, despite the opening you had described and the natural light in alaska... so i would recommend buying or renting a faster lens 1.8 or 2 should be great... i mean its up to you.. just trying to suggest as i had a similar experience before...and well about the flash the 430ex is simply awesome... you might be able to make the use of bigger ISO setting however, you know about how noisy it will get...so a faster lens dear
