Edward, thanks for getting back. I have tried the fine scanning mode and the banding has gone. The scan times are really slow though as you say!
Could this be a hardware issue with the misalignment of the CCD's or is this normal for a 9000?
I have a Coolscan 5000 as well, which has 2 CCD's I think, and have never seen this issue.

I recently purchased a Coolscan 9000, and I'm getting a banding across the whole frame. I've tried lots of different frames and settings in Vuescan and Nikon Scan with the same result. When I tried multi sampling x5 it virtually disappeared. Any clues as to what this might be, hardware or software?

Steve, thanks. Just have to work around it I suppose.

When I scan with the Coolscan 5000 with the SA-21 adapter I get a cropped frame image compared to the full frame image I get when I scan with the FH-3 holder. I use Vuescan but its the same in NikonScan. Is this normal and is there a way to get the full frame image using the SA-21, as its obviously a lot more convenient.

Dan, I don't think its the film (scanned @2400)- I did another test and turned frame 3 around in the SA-21 and the banding moves to the other side. I also scanned it with the FH-3 holder and the banding is almost gone. I posted the full images here on my flickr site:
Yesterday afternoon I borrowed another LS5000 and scanned the same frame and the results were exactly the same!
I also scanned using NikonScan with identical results.
I also scanned with the front of the scanner covered over to stop any potential light entering but it was the same.
It seems to be on random frames from different types of film shot with different cameras.

Down the left hand side.

Chris, I get it on the second and third frame but not on the first or last of a strip of 4 negs! But only on some negs not on others. I have turned the film around but you then get the wide banding on the other side.

On a recently purchased LS50 and LS5000 I'm getting, on some frames, a banding down the edge of the frame, not on all. Its more pronounced on the LS5000. I'm using Vuescan. 48bitRGB. It was the third frame along a strip of four. There was slight banding on the right side as well but to a lot lesser extent. The film was flat and not curled at all and I used the SA-21 film adapter.
I've scanned the frame/s on an Epson 3200 and see no banding, so its not the negs.
Anyone with similar issues, or any ideas?
Thanks Geoff

I've just purchased a used Nikon Coolscan V with a serial number 600166 from South Korea. Would anyone know what year it would have been manufactured?
Thanks Geoff

I’ve just purchased a used Nikon Coolscan V. Seems to work fine and with sharp results, but I was wondering wether to get it serviced/cleaned by Nikon as its probably 6 years old. (Early serial number 200xxx) I don’t know how much use its had or wether its ever been serviced. Is this a wise move and does any one know what work is included in the service? Nikon UK quoted me an hours labour + (parts if required) £60
Thanks Geoff

Jeff, Edward, thanks for your responses. Its a V I'm looking at so it looks like I'll be fine, I have a spare cable lying around somewhere.

-

I am in the UK and thinking of buying a Nikon Coolscan from the US. Would I need a different power cable/plug ?
Thanks Geoff

Thanks for your responses, I have a Rolleicord V so the 3 parter looks a good option.

-

Is there any difference in image quality between the older 3 part Rolleinar set and the later 2 part, in either 1/2 or3? Or any advantage in the viewing lenses being in 2 parts? The 3 parters seem to be a bit cheaper and more available.
Thanks Geoff

Jeff, they are rare indeed. But how do I transplant a smaller diameter Nikon diopter lens into a larger diameter Canon eyepiece?! I think I'll just keep my specs on!

-

Because I'm quite happy with my F-1!

-

Hi Rick - I have one or two Nikon diopters, but even the largest diameter ones for the F/F2 are a smaller diameter and different thread anyway.

-

Trouble is he won't sell the lens without selling the camera!

-

Anyone got a +0.5 dioptric lens for an F-1 they no longer need? Can't find one anywhere. I didn't think they ever made a +0.5 for the F-1 but saw one on a New F-1N the other day.
Thanks Geoff

Thanks for your responses.
Nick, do you use the driver installed from the NikonScan software then, and is your Mac PPC or Intel?
Scott, I'll think I'll give it a go as I'm running 10.5.8 on my G5, if it starts misbehaving I'll plump for Vuescan, as Silverfast is quite expensive.

Hi
I'm thinking of getting a used Nikon LS 8000ED. As Nikon don't support OSX 10.5 I will probably use Vuescan for its driver and maybe software. I'd also like to use Nikon Scan, (as I think Vuescan won't run via Photoshop) the latest version being 4.0.2 ('07) for the Mac. Will this run under OSX 10.5? I don't really want to splash out on Silverfast.
Thanks Geoff

Tony, it sounds like your screen, like Ferdi says is probably not original? I just went on the Rolleiclub forum and found a post from a guy who says that the Chinese Seagull TLR camera that's in manufacture has a good screen that fits the Cord. I emailed http://www.chiifcameras.com/site2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6&Itemid=6 - a supplier of Seagulls to see if thats the case and if they're available/cost etc. Worth a try!

Matt,Jeff thanks. I'm looking to get a Rolleicord V/a/b at present - looks like it'll be a b if I can find one for a reasonble price! I'm not sure the replacement screens are as good as the original rollei ones. (I've only seen the Oleson one though).

Does anyone know if the focus screens in the Rolleicord V/Va differ from the ones in the Vb in terms of brightness, clarity etc?
Thanks Geoff

Nikon Coolscan 9000ED banding issue
in The Digital Darkroom: Process, Technique & Printing
Posted

Thanks for all yor responses.
Since I posted after running the scanner for the first time and getting the banding I’ve had a bit more time to scan different types of film/format. The scanner is as new, as I bought it from a guy who bought it new in November 2010 for a project that never materialized and so decided to sell.
The example I posted was the first roll of 35mm Ilford FP4 that I scanned in Vuescan. On most of the frames with flat areas of tone I could see the banding. In ‘fine mode’ it disappeared. In NikonScan it was there but just about – not anywhere near as noticeable.
And on certain frames (visible banding in Viuescan)I couldn’t see it at all.
I’ve scanned more b/w 35mm/b’w 120 and 35mm colour neg and slide and haven’t seen the issue in either Vuescan or Nikon Scan!
That first roll of Ilford was also scanned on the 5000 with no banding visible.
So, not really sure whats going on. Maybe it was settling down!
