We don't get much lightning up here either, I was just lucky enough to catch a rare summer storm. I used a tripod and shot a 13 second exposure at f11, iso 800 at 45mm. Basically with a long exposure, any lightning that comes down during that time will show up clearly in the shot. I experimented with doing longer and shorter exposures but wasn't getting the same results... Long exposures made the clouds appear too orange due to the lighting from the street, and short exposures didn't allow enough time for anything to happen unless I was really lucky.
