I have this lens. Bought it for price and was disappointed in it as a telephoto lens, (very difficult to use without a tripod). Was going to sell it when I started trying the MACRO functions. Set focal length above 200 mm and switch MACRO mode on. The lens will now focus at surprisingly close distances at all focal lengths between 200-300 mm. With work I was able to get nice close ups of flowers. Still need a tripod but at the price it might be worth it to have something new to experiment and learn as I am doing. You must turn MACRO off to set focal lengths below 200 mm. </p>

Never been on safari but I own the 70-300 mm VR which I find is a wonderful lens everything just works. I also just purchased the Sigma 150-500 mm the lens works great with the following two issues that affect how you use it. 1. The lens requires a lot of light, depending on the situation it may not auto focus even in the evening. 2. The OS (Sigma for VR) works a bit different that Nikons VR. It usually takes about 1 second from the time you achieve focus for the OS to activate. Once it activates it is great, but this delay does not seem to occur with the Nikon VR. Hope this helps your decision making.</p>

<p>I do apologize for my mistake. However when I put the 18-55 mm Nikon DX kit lens on my N80 I only see the dark circles in the view finder at 18 mm. Above 18 mm everything looks normal. Does this mean the lens will work properly on the N80 at focal lengths above 18 mm ? </p>
