Thanks Matt, so I need to get a longer lense to get a closer shot which will result in a bigger subject when printing.

This may be a really stupid question but am I right in thinking a 300mm lense on a Canon 5D would give you roughly the same subject image size as a 500mm lense on a Canon 40d. I ask as I am trying to decide whether to by a 500mm lense for my 40D or stick with the 300mm I already have and upgrade to a 5D.

Thanks

Many thanks to all who replied. I now know I need to lower my expectations of what is achievable.

Thanks Rainer T - I realise this now.
Thanks also to Alan Marcus for your brilliant explanation. I will copy the text and print it off to re-read and hopefully fully understand and remember.
Thanks again.

Thanks again. Been thinking about it and would a prime lens say the Canon EF 400mm f5.6L USM give me sharp enough shots to crop and enlarge for a decent sized print.

Thanks Rob, I'll have a look at that.

Hi, I'm very new to photography so please be gentle. I have a Canon 40D and have been using a Canon 70 - 300mm is lense. I recently photographed an Osprey, which was about 800m away and was disappointed by the size of the bird in the resulting photograph.

My question is would the Tamron 200-500mm used at 500mm make the subject - in this case the Osprey -appear that much bigger to justify the price. Or is there a better alternative or should I just forget it. I am unable to get any closer to the birds. Please help.

Thanks

I am posting this on behalf of my wife who is starting to get into macro photography. She has an EOS 40D with an EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens. She also uses a laptop running Vista Home Premium. I am wondering if there is any way that the camera and the laptop can be linked so that she can view the camera viewfinder picture on the laptop at the same time. Her eye sight is not great in that one eye is short sighted and the other long sighted and she struggles with setting up the macro shots. I am thinking that if she could see the image on the laptop screen it would help her setting up the shots. I know very little about all this so may be I'm asking too much, but if anyone could help it would be appreciated.
Many Thanks
