1.
I recently got back from a family vacation in London and Paris, and dragged all of my gear with me, which inlcluded the 70-200 2.8. Besides using it in my sister's backyard to take portraits, I only used it a couple of others times. It is a great lens but a pain to carry around all day while trying to enjoy the sights. The 17-40 f4L and 24-105 f4L IS saw more use than anyother lens I took.

  2.
My vote is for 70-200 f2.8, which is what I goto whenever I am shooting portraits. I recently purchased the 100 mm f.28 macro, it is an excellent lens but I haven't tried portraits yet - so can't comment on it. From everything I have read it is a great choice.

I had a similar choice to make in December. I couldn't decide between the 70-200 f4L or f2.8L. Didn't have the money to upgrade to the f2.8 L IS.
In the end the f4 and f2.8 cost about the same and I went with the latter simply because it offered more flexibility in low light conditions. I couldn't be happier with my decision.
Buy a cheap body, get L glass and you will not regret it.
