1.
As a user of both the 5D and 5D MkII, I"ve been looking for a 3rd body with more fps for sports. I've compared shots from a 50D, using my 24-105 lens, to shots from my 5D and there simply is no comparison. I can't seem to make the 50D shots come clear and clean and the shots, same time same place, from the 5D are like a window to the time slot, clear and real life. This has had me struggling with the idea of another body, a crop frame, or a 135mm f2. I have to say this as well, I've been really looking at the 1D MkIIn for it's quality and still come back to the hard choice of fantastic glass for the 2 bodies I already have.
Daniel, you and Scott both have points, I believe I like Scotts argument better as I have yet to see a crop body capable of making the prints a ff does! Do a life size wall cling or banner and see the result. I've used the 20D, 30D, 40D, 5D and 5D MkII. I actually even favor the 5D's IQ over the MkII. So smooth and lifelike, without the apparent film grain look the high pixel count seems to bring.
OP, you've got the right idea as suggested by Maurine, get what you'll use and use what you get. Either way, put great glass in front and it's hard to be disappointed in most cases.
My 2 cents.

 2.
Went to Bellingrath Gardens in Alabama while visiting my wife's family in Mississippi. Had no idea we'd be in a botanical gardens so had no camera bag to carry extra lenses. I bought a shoulder bag from them (not cheaply) and carried my 70-200 2.8L IS and 100mm macro in it for several hours of tour using a wide angle the majority of the time. Of course, being the photographer that I am, pictures from the travelled path weren't good enough, I had to jump off a 2' retaining wall with a 4' drop off on the other side to get a better angle! The strap broke (upon landing) on the cheaply made bag and $2300 worth of lenses went "thunk" on the ground! I bout had a heart attack!
Turned out no damage was done, but of course I couldn't know that til I had time to test the lenses later on. The day was ruined and we promptly left, little one was starving by that time anyway, but ended up with some fantastic pictures of a beautiful place in early spring.
I now have a great bag from M Rock! ;)
