1.
Q.G. - they have heard me complain but to change the system setting they will probably need more than 1 complainer. Will try that more aggressively today.
Steve, that looks like a good idea too if I can use batch processing (there are over 1200 images). I checked out Lightroom which I have used only sparingly and under the Develop option I can change the 'sharpening' but the range is 0 upwards - so I couldn't find my way to reduce 'sharpening' but there is the 'clarity' option. Is that the same?

What I have done for now to to ad a note in the description saying that there is oversharpening in the images and if they would like to see the originals to please write to me. A halfway solution but it seems to be the only way right now.
Thank you Q.G. & Steve

 2.
Gary, I checked on the Safari and Firefox - the problem exists on both.

Further, I looked at all the original images and most were within the limits prescribed. Only a few were resized by their server yet the problem persists in all.
So I guess at some point the sharpening process has been set up .. but unfortunately I am getting no answers from their tech side.

Quite a problem since online shoppers have only photos to base their decision on!
Will find a way.

 3.
Hector,
Will try out the 'bicubic sharper' resizing to understand this better. Life is full of mysteries and the many options that PS offers me at every step are some of the deepest ones!
And yes the website may have some default settings that probably do not problems for others.
Am hoping this will work.

Thanks
4.
Howard,
I used ftp to upload to their site using Filezila and the website is an auction site artfact.com.

Michael,
Yes, even when I 'save image as' onto my desktop the image looks sharpened.
There may be a size change in a few as some were above the pixel / kb limits set but this sharpening appears on all - regardless of the specs of the uploaded files.

Thanks....

 5.
Hello,

I need of some help....

I sell a few things on my own website and other online portals.

This is the first time I am using a particular provider and am facing this problem: the images are getting sharpened automatically and making the article look terrible.

The website tech support says that they are not making any changes at their end.

I am attaching an original file and a screenshot of the file once it is on their website.

Does anyone have any idea why this oversharpening is happening and how I could correct it?

(Couldn't find a relevant category to post this under ... so I've posted it here.

Thank you in advance.

 6.
Thanks Wouter for demystifying this. Now I understand the math (I think).

In this case we have no choice but to work with the existing files as the shots are all from travels and it is not possible to reshoot.

 7.
Hello everyone,

I do not know much about printing and leave that aspect entirely to my printers when we print poster sized images.

This time, a client is handling the printing directly and they are facing the following problem:

My file size handed over to them is around 2400 x 3000 pixels at 300 dpi. This translates to about 20cm x 26 cm document size.

Let us say that this has to be printed in the size 80 cm x 120 cm.

Their printer has come back to them saying that the file size that I have given them is not enough and I should give them larger files. (This has created a slight delay in the project as I am travelling, am on slow internet and cannot upload files that are 70MB each.)

The only way I know how to make my original files larger is through Photoshop -> Image Size and change the values and get a larger file.

I doubt that my solution is the correct one, because surely the printer couldn't be serious about sending the whole batch back for reprocessing and creating a delay for a solution as simple as the one I am suggesting?

But I really do not know any other way. Even my RAW files are no larger than 3000 x 4000 so how would that suffice for this print?

Please help.

 8.
Allan,

I think the issue here is that the "20mm lens was ten times worse than when I'd left it"

That this happened at a Nikon approved service centre is appalling and unacceptable not only to customers but also quite likely also to Nikon.

If possible you should bring this to the notice of Nikon. Bad customer handling might even be tolerated but making a lens worse than it was is pure technical sacrilege.

 9.
A suggestion :
Could Photo.net consider putting up a "matchmaking" page where Mentors & Mentees could meet?

People looking for mentors could put up a a profile / portfolio etc and prospective mentors could take it up from there.

And then the relationship could evolve from there.

Somewhat like the classifieds section - except that the goal here is a long term one.

Possible?

 10.
Thanks Murali,
After all the inputs from photo.net members and others, I think most pieces will be in the 2x3 size and the most impactful 3 or 4 pieces - will be in a larger size.
About above-average frames - I have also read the recent article on photo.net that emphasizes framing - but I don't know how to get around that as it will take the cost up really high. So I am still looking at the options.
Printing in India seems viable and with my current travel schedule I can bring these back with me. (I am based in India as well as Singapore and spend 2months in each place). I will be checking out printing in Singapore to see how it compares and then decide. The quality and experience of the printers is comparable.
About the art market - Singapore or anywhere - I know absolutely nothing. :) So yes, it does make me nervous enough to get a curator. Will check this out.
Thanks for the appreciation! If the subject is great its hard not to make a good capture.
cheers
11.
This afternoon I visited the printer here. He is experienced with photographing and reprinting paintings of masters and has archived the collection of M.F. Hussain and others. His expertise has assured me that I can leave some of these details to him.
The 3 x 4 looked like a good size, but I think my budget for initial outlay may not allow me to print all in that size.
I use a Nikon D3s with 6100 px on the longer side which ought to be sufficient for these.
It's also good to hear about the 5 figure prices :) something to dream about for the future!
12.
Thanks Monika & Michael,
I think I have the marketing angle covered to some extent with reasonable access to customers who might appreciate this type of work. As you suggest I will also address art galleries and art professionals. My concerns are mainly about the production aspects.
I will reach out to some curators and explore the arrangements with them.
I am checking out prices for printing and I was quoted USD 14 per sq foot for printing using an Epson 11880 on archival paper. (In Bombay - which is where I am currently - I have yet to check out Singapore prices).
So a 3 x 4 ft would cost me USD 168 for printing.
Add to that the mounting & framing and a fraction of exhibition overheads. The cost itself will be quite high - as you rightly say - around USD 350 - 400 ..........
So unless I can bring in corporates to buy, this number does look unfeasible.
Thanks for helping me to think through these issues.
13.
Thank you Monika & Michael,
The venue is a known gallery attached to the Museum in Singapore so the lighting is well managed.
I will add aura to the exhibition with a few antique tribal textiles and tribal jewelry items, along with the stories printed and mounted on soft board as suggested.

Both of you recommend ink instead of canvas so I read up some more on the ink prints.
This leads to more questions :
1. Giclee printing seems to be the better option? Before finalising with a printer, what should I check out about his equipment? Are there any machine models that are recommended for this kind of work?
2. There seem to be numerous options on the paper - archival paper to others..... any recommendations?

About getting a curator:
1. Not sure if I can afford one at this stage
2. Am not sure if anyone will take on an unknown
3. What would their role be? In the artistic aspect of the planning - such as layout & sequencing I hope to add in my personal touch... and in the production I am hoping that the print suppliers will provide their expert help but is there a role they play in marketing the exhibition?

Michael,
I am thinking of a max size of approx 36 " x 48 " since my principal audience will be individuals who will hang these on their home walls. This size will be reserved for the best few images that I expect people might appreciate the most and therefore pay a higher price for. The others will be 12 x 24 and 24 x 36.

Am truly grateful to be able to discuss this here - its helping me to move ahead!
Thanks again!
14.
Hello,

In November this year I will be hosting my first exhibition. The subject is Tribal portraits and there is no curator - I am organising the event myself.

I am not formally trained in photography or art so I have large knowledge gaps and would appreciate help on the following issues:

1. Any ideal print size for the subject of portraits?
2. Giclee printing + mounting or Canvas printing?
3. For the ones that will be limited edition, what is a good number?
4. Any other do's and don'ts?

thanks in advance
15.
Thanks for the responses Peter, Mukul, Alex and Craig.
Peter, my emails to them were enquiries about frequency of reports generated, why the contract they said they have sent had not reached me and such other admin details - not really about the sales of my images.
Alex, after their names showed up in lists of agencies posted on the web, I checked out their website. I googled the names of the main guys running the agencies. In one case they turned out to be reputed photogs associated with NG. I did not enquire with other photogs that they represent. In hindsight I should have done that. But I acted in good faith, and it appears now that that was a bad idea.
Craig, it IS one side of the story ... but when there is nothing but silence - its not about a deal going bad - its just complete lack of communication that is annoying. If there were a dispute or a disagreement, there would at least be the possibility of finding a solution. But right now its a dead end. I am aware that the net needs to be used carefully before posting anything negative - so I am not doing that. But I do wish there was some fair way to deal with this!
thanks

jaina

 16.
Hello,
In the past year, I was accepted by several stock agencies. With 2 out of the 6 that I began with, things are turning really sour.
In both cases, they simply do not communicate once they have received the hi-res images. Repeated emails and reminders over an extended period elicit no response, and this is after they have confirmed that the DVDs were received by them.
The two agencies are run by individuals - not large corporate houses and their names feature in the lists of agencies floating on the net, as well as in printed business guidebooks for photographers.
The doubt that nags me is that they might use my 500 images without honoring the agreement with me. No doubt my few images wont go very far in increasing their income, but I am probably not the only photographer that's in this boat.
Is there a list out there of agencies that are known to be dishonest / unscrupulous? It would be nice for newcomers to know what to avoid.
Thanks
17.
Yes - the thrill certainly boils down to seeing it printed / valued by others.
Its definitely not the money (yet)- the 80 euro won't go very far even in the dinner celebrations for the family :) but its fun to know that someone out there is willing to pay for things I produce!
Wish we could all sit down together celebrate our first sales :)
Thanks all!
