1.
How many people have an Optical test bench?
While I am sure next to older cameras like the D300, the 70D does fine
and can satisfy most people, especially sports shooters, that isn't the point
that most people are talking about. The point most of the posts I have
read here on Pnet, and Dpreview Nikon forum have made is that
a $1200 aps-c camera is unable to trounce the M 4/3 Om e m5.
Also, the D7100 is a much better IQ camera, for a similar price.
While the Canon touts its phase detection AF, the D7100 uses
the D4 AF module, and its known as Nikons best sports AF, which is
top notch. The DXO computer analytic s just spits out the test results
it doesn't know if its a Canon or Olympus, a FF or a M 4/3, its
blind to fanboy politics, so its a useful tool. If you got Canon lenses
the 70d has lots of up to date features so go get it if you need a new camera
otherwise wait for Canon to come up with the 80d which will be better.

  2.
Over on Dpreview Nikon forum they have 111 posts/replies on this subject.
The Canon defenders have their shorts in a bunch, making excuses like at ISO
200 shooting a race car they would rather have a 70d. They are blaming
the messenger DXO, but have no way to refute their machine optical bench findings.
I find it humorous. Sure if you can shoot at base ISO, but almost any half way decent
digital can give nice ISO 200 results, one expects more of a camera costing over $1,000.
3.
Look at how close the M 4/3 is to the Canon with its larger APS-C sensor, in fact
in every DXO mark test, except High Iso (where they were still close) the M 4/3 won.

Nikon was head and shoulders winner here must be that those Toshiba sensors
are using new tech.
The Nex 5n also beats the Canon 70d, but not the Nikon.

  5.
Nikon rocks
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/(appareil1)/895%7C0/(brand)/Canon/(appareil2)/865%7C0/(brand2)/Nikon
As much as sometimes we are frustrated with Nikon they are putting out great products
This test shows a definite Nikon win. For me personally the dynamic range and high ISO are
very significant. I also was surprised that the Canon was just on par with the Olympus E-P5
M 4/3 camera (I have one of those) despite the much larger sensor.

  6.
I think of it with a 14mm or 20mm Pany pancake lens as an enthusiast Point and Shoot, that
can be switched into a full featured mode with the dials, knobs and buttons to match.
What can't the thing do? And the look and construction reminds me of the old time rangefinders.

  7.
I just got a good deal on an E-P5 want to use it with the 14 f2.8 and the 20 f1.7 as
a take along street camera. I love the dual dials, controls assignable for everything, tiltable touch
screen with total control and touch AF point and touch shutter control. I know that soon
low light sensitivity will be boosted when Oly uses a new generation of Sony BSI sensors, but
I can always upgrade my Nex 5n.
Only the M43 has small enough lenses to be used as a P&S and controls like my D7100.
So if I expect to go out for night shooting I will take the D7100.

  8.
I use the CV 58mm f1.4 and most of the high end Nikons have focus confirmation, the lens
is a type P lens, so its chipped. I also have the 105mm VR AFS macro between the two
you can get what you want. Oh I forgot I have the 85mm f1.4 D its about 128mm efl
on DX so you can do portaits 58 mm (87mm efl); 85mm (127mm efl;or 105mm about(165mm) efl
something for everyone. I only carry the 58 and 105, the 85 is sometimes used for occasional
film camera use. The 58 is a nicely made small lens and sharp with nice colors.
Originally it was designed for the Topcon camera.
Portrait many people like to use their AF cameras in MF especially on a posed subject.
Using Leicas for many years and a Pentax 6x7 I never missed AF for portrait photos,
AF is no big deal for that or landscapes.

  9.
I notice that the forum seems more prone to personal attacks than years ago. I have taken
several years off from regular posting. Years ago I had racked up over 2,000 posts, and read
maybe 10x that many posts and learned a lot.
This was alway fun, and what little I know I tried to share with others with a sense of fellowship.
Andy don't worry about hurting my feelings, my user ID was chosen because I have been a student
of many martial arts for 50 years and I am used to defending against much more vicious attacks
than a few words questioning my integrity. And I pride myself on never placing my own
interests ahead of giving everyone I deal with a Square Deal, I never tried to get over, cheat
anyone, and hope they return the favor. Of course if they don't I have many ways to punish them

  10.
Give me a break, you have got to be kidding. Photo.net reviewed 2 lenses made by Sigma this
year so far and I am sure that if they could get their hands on a sample of this fast DX lens they
would then review it. So far Photo.net has also reviewed 2 Canon and 2 Nikon lenses.
I have one of pre order since June 15th, and I am more than a little annoyed by the delays,
does that sound like a person who works for Sigma?
If telling what I know about a lens delayed availibility since I emailed Sigma twice makes
me seem like a toadie its just me being a good member. I figured this lens is of general interest as it has had so many posts discussing it. If I worked for Sigma I would be asking for
a free sample instead of waiting in line to pay full retail.

  12.
Panasonic is supposed to announce a new Lumix LX camera this month. If you
don't mind clipping your camera to your belt the LX has one of the best
control interfaces and a really fast Leica designed lens.
My guess is that the new LX might have a BSI sensor to improve the
sensitivity about a half stop. Maybe they will add articulated screen.

  13.
When Sony introduced the new RX100 M2 compact they said the BSI sensor increased the
sensitivity by 40%. Soon they are going to announce new Nex cameras with APS-c sensor
If they are also improved by about that much, then with new fast lenses like this lens and the
Samyang 16mm f2, I think many who want to have smaller cameras will be able to get
satisfactory high iso images without carrying around big heavy FF gear. We feel that if
the APS-c can get to the point where ISO 3200 is low in noise most will be happy .
If you have an extra f stop due to a fast lens you might only need good iso 1600 to
get the same shot.
I'm sure some pros might point to their iso 6400 on ff cameras, but I don't think
most people need that.

  14.
Shot with the lens video. Except for the so called humor, the photography is first rate and worth
watching. Lots of images that show what the lens can do in various situations.
<a href="

If you hate bad humor skip the first minute and a half.

  15.
I got an email from Sigma Customer support, so its got to be their policy.
We have been waiting for great new products from Sigma and they are giving
us what we want.
I read that there is a F2.0 24-70mm Sigma is going to announce at Photokina.
I read its going to be a FF lens. Given the size and weight of the 35mm f1.4\
a FF f2.0 zoom would be a big hand full. Not to mention pricey

  16.
Eric and Matthew, I ain't crying, I went on my 3 week vacation and got by with old Nikon
lenses like the 20-35 f2.8 and 24-85 f2.8-4, and with no other trip planned the delay
means little to me. Just reporting here what I found out since 2 month delay is a significant change
change in my understanding that the product was shipping in all mounts July 31st.
Eric, I'm holding tight, and Matthew, I hope the Canonites like you say are the testers for
getting the bugs out before Nikon customers get the new lens. Hopefully there will
be firmware upgrades, and Adobe will have a chance to update the lens database.
I'm at the top of the list, and now I know the product will be thoroughly vetted
before I get mine, that makes up a little for the extended wait.

  17.
If the camera has built in stabilization that kind of makes this question mute.
Even if its only 2 stops of stabilization vs. 4 stops, it works with slow and fast
lenses. And of course a fast lens need not cost more for some advantage.
I have some older fast AIS glass and I wish we would get stabilization inside
at least the DX cameras

  18.
I contacted my camera dealer who I pre-ordered my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 from and was told
only Canon lenses came in. I emailed Sigma and was told Nikon mount versions will be made
after Canon mounts are shipped. I was told its a two more lag behind Canon fulfillment.
That in my opinion tells me that Sigma cares more about Canon customers than Nikon folks.
Nikon folks who pre-ordered will be waiting until end of September.

  19.
How many times did you buy X and then just after the purchase Y was announced.
Well, I have had it happen to me a few times. The rumor sites have some inside
info, they look at Patent filings, and they keep track of new demos.
I have been tipped off and waited and pre ordered and the items were first
mentioned on rumor sites. They have their place and are fun to read, for
ideas.

  20.
On FF f4 is the new F2.8, there is an article in one of the photo mags to that effect.
Digital FF cameras have very good high iso, and f4 will still allow subject isolation.
The high iso allows you to have fast shutter speeds.
On DX APS-C while the high iso is much better than it was especially on 16mp cameras,
if you want good DOF isolation then speed is king. The new Sigma f1.8 18-35, the
new Samyang 16mm f2.0 come to mind as new fast lenses for DX. There are lots of fast
50mm , 85mm primes with f1.4 , so a whole kit of fast lenses could be assembled to
make up a kit that doesn't need VR and can shoot at 2 stops slower equivalent ISO, meaning
less noise , shallower DOF, less shake, and the ability to stop motion something VR won't
give you. If you use a monopod like I do it helps me shoot a one shutter speed or ISO slower
factoring in the faster lenses. I go with faster lenses, then I can add filter, tele adapters
and other devices without losing too much light, and being concerned that the VR isn't going
to work with the TC or I am going to exceed the AF spec limit.
