A helicopter flew right through the middle of this 30 second exposure The exposure began when it was right in the middle of the shot. It looks like it flew out of the cloud but it was much closer than the thunderstorm. The helicopter was only about a mile away. The thunderstorm was about 25 miles away.

This night heron was standing out in the shallows of the intracoastal waterway in front of the West Palm Beach skyline, which is reflected onto the glassy water during this still summer night. I slowly walked out onto the mud flats with camera-on-tripod as close as I dare without scaring it away. I kept moving as he kept moving until I was able to place him in front of the brightest part of the reflection. Finally, he stopped and froze in this position for the entire 30 second exposure.

I think it's great how the head is hidden but in the reflection you can see
the rest of the seagull with a fish. Great timing! Thanks for posting larger image.
Really like it.

Yevgen, Great Composition.

Gallego, I really admire you work. You have a very unique style.
So, where are the people going with the lights? What is around the corner?

This photograph is fatastically unique.
Excellent composition.

I love the colors and the streaks in the sky from the 4 minute long
exposure. Good job on not being swept out to sea with your camera
gear!

Great capture with such a fast moving subject and very long lens.

Thank you for your comments.

This thunderstorm erupted out of the steamy swamp one hot August night and was filled with lots of internal lightning and an occasional cloud to ground strike as seen here. At the time this photo was taken the local radar showed the isolated thunderstorm 20 miles to the southwest of my home, which is in Wellington, Florida. The prominent upward boiling configuration in the cloud structure is a clear indicator of its rapid growth. 30 Seconds @5.6 ISO 200.

During this 30 second long exposure and several seconds after this arm of lightning reached out across the sky and stirred the village with a big boom, my neighbor leaned out his balcony doorway to have a look.

Hello all. Your comments, thoughts, and ideas are much appreciated.
Sincerely, John.
SEAGULLS ARE QUITE WICKED WHEN THEY ARE FEEDING. THEY
HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO MANNERS AND WILL DO JUST ABOUT
ANYTHING TO GET ANY MORSEL OF FOOD, INCLUDING SHOVING
MUCH SMALLER BIRDS OUT OF THEIR WAY LIKE THIS
UNFORTUNATE GRACKLE.

Hello all. I look forward to all your thoughts, comments and ideas:
Thank you, John.
This armored catfish apparently wasn't armored enough to protect him
from the lightning fast bill of this blue heron. I stood in amazement as this
heron stabbed this catfish over and over again sending a loud cracking
sound each time through the silent swamp. I could not believe that he went
on to swallow the entire catfish whole- hard shell, sharp spines, still
wiggling body, and all. I still wonder if this heron lived through the agonizing
digestion process. (Please see the complete sequence on my page if you
simply can't believe it's possible- like I did.)

Richard, I have always preferred lightning shots like this that have something in the foreground to give the photo scale. I live in Wellington, FL and I was shooting the same storm last Friday night from my backyard. I got some pretty cool shots but haven't uploaded them yet. The only recommendation I have for you is to set the camera to manual, for example at asa 250, 30 seconds, f8, lock the shutter with a cable release so it's taking photos continuously and then get back in your car or a building. It's just not worth get blasted with a 100 million volts!
Best Regards, John.
