1.
Hello! I am interested in learning what other people on this board do for lighting during the posed portraits session, ie off camera flash(es), reflectors, umbrellas, etc. Also, I am interested to know about the use of tripods, I would suppose that unless you had an assistant it would be a bit more difficult to set an off camera flash technique without a tripod. If you use a tripod for your camera what material is yours made out of? I am thinking the tripod that I will eventually invest in will be aluminum - I don't know if I can justify the expense of carbon fiber.

 2.
Without having read all the responses firstly, CONGRATULATIONS! My husband and I are getting ready to have a little girl who is due beginning of April. My husband too, wants to do some photography but I can say that I want him to be with me more than anything. With that said, we both want pictures taken afterwards, how soon depends on how all 3 of us are feeling! If you def want to do either camera or camcorder I would opt for film, just b/c I think you would miss fewer moments.

Best of luck to you, your wife and the little one on the way! :-)

 3.
As far as post production I work off a MAC and have iPhoto and Aperture 2. I want to be able to do the effect where you have a b&w image and just make a certain part of the picture in color (ie the bouquet). I don't believe I can do that on Aperture. :-( Does anyone have experience with the Nikon software (NX2) and know if this post pro effect can be accomplished with this software or if there are any distinct advantages of this software over Aperture 2? I am trying to decide what direction I should go for as far as software, is Photoshop far & away better than either of these options?

 4.
Thanks Bruce! The 24 - 70 and 70 - 200 are the ones that I am planning on renting for jobs till I can afford my own. I can't wait to own these lenses! I had really hoped to take advantage of my 5 frames per second (I love taking pics of my horse in motion) with my own zoom, I don't want to have to rent for my own personal use. I will look into the 70 - 300.... Although I do really have my heart set on the 24-70 & 70-200. Hopefully, I will book enough jobs this year to pay for them.

 5.
Thanks everyone. I will look at my camera's settings. When I have my primary on the camera it is awesome! I couldn't be more pleased. I will mess around with the DX glass on it some more and see if I can't adjust the settings.

Ronald, I am not familiar with that lens off the top of my head. Is that an FX lens, Nikon, VR?

 6.
Hello, I am always interested in trying to increase my knowledge about photography, specifically wedding photography and I am interested to know what 'tools' are valuable sources for other photogs on this forum. I am not in the position immediately to take a hands on workshop or seminar but would love to hear any 'you must clinic/workshop' with this person type things...

Mainly I am looking for your list of must read books and I would love to know if there are any must see dvd's. Dvd's particularly b/c I read all the time and sometimes it's nice just to be able to sit back and watch something!

Thanks for any suggestions,
7.
I recently purchased a D700, I am in love! I currently only own 2 lenses (I plan on reinvesting soon but am renting in the interim). My 2 lenses are, FX 50mm 1.8 and the DX 18-200mm. I adore my new camera and it brings tears to my eyes putting a DX sensor lens. However I don't know if I am being paranoid but it seems to me that I am experiencing a degradation in quality w/ the DX lens on my FX sensor. IMO, it seems that my DX lens on the DX sensor actually come out sharper and more detailed than on the D700! I was expecting the same quality that I was getting from the DX pairing not any less. Any thoughts, is it just me being too nit picky? As a side note, I have only slapped the 18-200 on the D700 once, I think, and it was used for taking pictures of horses outdoors, and my dumb self completely had left the white balance on the camera at a setting that was not appropriate for outdoor shooting.

 8.
Thanks for the link, Shun!

Frank, that feature was one that I really liked regarding the 900, I also like how you can 'shape' the light. Are you a 900 user? If so, I would love to hear about the flash from someone who is very familiar with the 900 and uses it for weddings and can testify to it being a wonderful flash as far being able to withstand use at a wedding. Even though you can switch off the auto shut down feature it concerns me that I have read so many reviews about the flash shutting down after 6 or so shots. I just feel that it might be a delicate little flower.

 9.
Everyone thanks so much for the responses, some have been particularly insightful. A lot of points to think about. I have frantically been online looking trying to decide which one I want as I noticed that Adorama who had the SB800 this morning didn't have that flash this evening... Amazon has it sold through CametaCamera for like $420, Penn doesn't have it... it ended up that the Ritz by my house had 2 left in stock so I just bought them both! I am going to try it out and maybe rent the 900 for comparison, if I like the 900 I'll probably add that flash to my equipment and sell the other 800. I am really excited about testing out the flash.

 10.
I have a new camera that I haven't gotten to use at a wedding yet - it's my dream camera, a D700. I need a flash for this camera, I have a specific job in mind coming up, where I can use flash during the actual ceremony, very dimly lit room, not a church. I basically want to make sure that whatever flash I put on it is going to project wonderful light (of course) but is going to be a work horse and be able to stand-up to shooting for 5 hours. I know that the SB800 was recently discontinued however is still available. Based on reading reviews of both of these flashes I decided that the 800 was the better flash for me for a few reasons. My big red flag for the SB900 is that I have heard that it isn't as much of a work horse as the 800 and have read reviews from wedding photogs of their 900's over heating on them. That is a HUGE concern for me. I am just curious to know the various opinions of the photogs here. Anything you wouldn't mind sharing would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
11.
I just let the bride to be know that I won't be able to photograph her wedding. I feel good about the decision but wish there was a way of knowing if it would work out. Oh well, I am sure by April all I will be thinking about is my baby!

Thanks again everyone!

 12.
Thanks everyone for your advice, I appreciate it. Yes, this is my first which explains why I am clueless!!! ;-)

My fear excepting the wedding was that my baby would not come out on her due date (as John said), April 7 and that she would end up being born like a week before the wedding - ahg!!!! I guess I can't expect her to be on a schedule and I can't predict what my labor will be like but wouldn't it be nice if I could? ;-) It's just a shame b/c the style of this wedding is perfect for me and sounds like a lot of fun plus I need the $. I would feel awful though if anything were to prevent me from being able to be there.

David H, sorry you and your wife had so much of an adventure w/ your first 2! Glad all was well.

 13.
I just got an email about photographing a wedding in my area in late April - it sounds like a very fun wedding to shoot and I really want to take the job. My concern is I am due to have a baby at the beginning of April, my first. My Dr.'s office is closed so I can't call and talk to her till tomorrow but I was wondering if there were any Mom's that might be reading this - how long after having the baby have you waited to shoot? I don't think that the wedding is too long, probably under 6 hours of photography.
Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
14.
Thanks Bill!!!!! I just looked at their site and they have some AMAZING albums! I love the Bijou line, it's very sweet. The Signature line is lovely and their Precious Metals line is unreal. I just registered with them, I am really looking forward to seeing their products in person, actually they are in the DC area and so am I. Very cool that Clay Blackmore uses them too.

 15.
Hello all, I did a search for this lab and I couldn't find anything so sorry if this has already been asked!
I am new to Wedding Photography and I am looking for quality albums. I just ordered a hard cover book from Millers, to take to client meetings, I have used Miller's before for prints, business cards, etc and have been happy with everything thus far. I am looking forward to getting my book in the mail but am curious to know if anyone here has any familiarity with their albums? They look quite lovely on the website.
I think the Pictage albums are adorable but I am not a fan of becoming a member just to be able to order their products.
If anyone reading this also has experience with Queensbury or any other rec's I would love to hear.
Thanks and everyone have a great New Year.
16.
Well everyone, I did it. I have signed up with The Knot whether it was a smart decision or not I will let you know. After reading through threads I had made up my mind NOT to advertise with them but I ended up giving it a go after a meeting with a photographer in my area who told me that she believed it would be the best bang for my buck (she herself advertises with them). I am new to wedding photography so if The Knot brides cater to lower budget weddings I do fit that bill and in my price range I will be 1 of 3 photographers which could be both good and bad???? Anyway, I am excited, lol. Fingers crossed it works out. Hopefully one day I will make enough money to be able to do a bridal show - which I know are expensive!
