Hi, been reading and gaining much info for quite a while on here, but now i need to ask a question, I recently purchased a second hand Nikon 17-55, to upgrade from my tamron 17-50 ( non built in motor ). First impressions were that I was not blown away by the Nikons Sharpness, if anything its softer than my well used Tamron. I have tried it on both my D300 & D7000 and it appears soft on both bodies. The contrast compared to the Tamron is much better though... Is this normal or would you think it may be a bad example ? I have held the lense up to the light and i can see a couple of black marks which appear to be inside the lense, one of these is a line probably a couple of mm long so its not a speck of dust, any idea if this may be not helping and what it might be in there as it dose not appear in my images. Final thing is it appears to be sharper if i dont use centre focus points !!! any ideas most welcome, cheers Tony.

Hi Simon, I have had the 17-50 Tamron (non BIM) for about eight months (£150.00 off ebay). I have used the lens for all sorts of purposes including indoor sports wide open with out flash. I do not recall the lens struggling to focus even under poor light, also the lens is very sharp. I would highly recommend this lens.

Hi Richard Sell the jessops flash and get a SB600, I had the same jessops flash on my D300, I struggled with it for a year and then upgraded to the sb600 as soon as i could afford to. The jessops flash is very inconsistent and over exposes at will. if you can afford to go straight to the SB900 if you intend to do a lot of flash work or shoot large groups of people. I am just beginning to find the limits of the SB600 after a year with it. Cheers Tony

I now shoot with a Nikon D300, previous to this i had a Olympus E20, A E500 and a E510, I myself was about to invest into a new lens, but decided to make the shift to Nikon, the low light iso performance, the avalibility of a wider range of lenses both new and used (and the fact here in the UK its hard to find Olympus lenses in most shops, you usually have to buy mail order). It is a move i would recommend to anyone as much as i really loved my olympus cameras there were to many plus points to Nikon. Make the change you wont regret it.

I had the same problem on my D300, i used a baby wipe, they shift almost anything, and have to be gentle as there ment for babys bottoms.
