13thumbs thanks -- it is definitely coming from the transport mechanism. Based on your description, I believe it is rubber coming from a deteriorating roller. I have the helpful link to the 4880 manual am just bewildered where to start I guess I will re-attack over the weekend. Thanks.

On second thought, does anyone know how to get at the rollers without wading through the 200+ pages of methodical disassembly in the manual? I think my interest here is limited to the transport mechanism.

Love my 4880, the thing has been a workhorse. Lately though I have been having recurring problems with irregular streaks and smudges (not pizza wheels). The smudges are always black. I have cleaned the print head and capping station. My gut is the streaks are decaying foam rubber than has gotten sucked into the rollers.
Does anyone have a tutorial on how to disassemble the 4880 and clean the innards beyond the capping station and print head?
Note: I have adjusted the platen gap and paper thickness with no impact on smudging.
Thanks.....

James thanks!

Love my Profoto softboxes but even on the lowest power setting they put out a LOT of light. I have used 3x3 foot sections of trash bag to dial down the lighting output but found a hint of green tint as a result, from the plastic. Does anyone know what is the classic solution to this problem? I have a 3x4' softbox and a 5x5' Octobox. Thanks in advance!

Not familiar with the V1, but your kit seems sensible. The more I travel and the more comfortable I get, the more the long lenses stay in the bag or at home. Just spent a week in Cairo, used the 70-200 VR II once, the 28 1.4 almost never came off the camera (a D-3 with F-4 backup).

Data point: I bought two refurb D-3s from Cameta and they both work great!

Thanks guys. Shun, it's my second body.

Hi I am starting to see 1-2 percent of my RAW files show up with file corruption problems. They open in LR4 as thumbnails but I can't edit and they will not convert to ACR.
The problem is not card-related as I have swapped cards.
Any ideas? I have a wedding tomorrow and if it stays at 1-2 percent I can live with that until I can get it fixed. Thanks!

Folks, great insight -- thanks!

I just got a nice clean Canon G1x from the auction site. Looking at a jpeg in Opanda it saws the "image number" is something astronomical like 1,230,256.
Is that the same as actuations? The camera does not look like it ha been used all that much.

Jeff thanks that's great advice! Rob

I'm sold on the idea of having a 4 x 8' magnetic whiteboard in my studio as a kind of way to lay out what I'm printing at the current moment without having to hang it on the wall in a more permanent way. Anyone have any ideas about which kind of magnetic white board to buy? 3M and Quartet seem like big names. I'd like to spend no more than $400. Thanks in advance.

Andrew and John, thanks much.

Can't say enough nice things about Lightroom 3.

Recently I thought I'd take advantage of a slow day to start converting the NEF archives from my D2-X days into ACR, to improve future prospects of being able to get access to my files.

I notice that the resultant files seem smaller, maybe an average of 8 MB per file (these are 12 bit RAW originals) instead of 10 MB per image.

Anyone have any thoughts on what if anything I'm losing?

Thanks!

William thanks. I'm staying with NS because of the superior automation with the SA-30 and SF-210.

I successfully migrated NikonScan 4.02 to Win 7, installing it in a virtual Win XP machine. The software works but crashes frequently. Sometimes it crashes after one scan, sometimes after 10. The scanner was rock solid on my old WinXP machine.
I have tried downloading and installing the Viewscan driver and this does not make any difference.
Any thoughts?

Dave thanks, great news. I have been using my Latitude laptop as a workaround, but that won't last forever.

I tried to update to Win 7 64 bit using Nikonscan software -- which I need for the SF-210 and SA-30 capability with by CS 5000 -- but with the VueScan driver. It works for one frame then gives up. Anyone have any ideas?

I use two D-3s (i.e., not D-3S) -- bought used the prices are within reach of a new D-700. Great for weddings.

I love my 4880 but I rarely use the roll feed capability or print over 13 x 19. Still the 220 ml carts are decidedly more economical than the ones the 3880 uses.

Update: After all that, I tried (for the third time) clicking on "reset the defaults" in the printer dialog box, and the PK suddenly switched to MK.
