They can be adequately corrected afterwards on the computer, so all is not lost. But I am convinced, there is an in-camera setting as well hidden somewhere in the menus. Eventually I'll discover it after spending time with the manual. But I agree with you, it's a strange out-of-the-box setting for a professional camera which I have never experienced with my trusty D200.
