1.
I've never been to Maui - but I've heard great things about it. I've heard that there's a little more of a "night life" there than Kauai (one former co worker told me she was bored to death on Kauai). I've been to Kauai a couple of times and my wife, daughter and I are actually going there in April for our 15 year anniversary. We love it. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice! Enjoy and congrats on the big 3-O!

"Some suggestions to share: Sunrise from the sandstone cliffs east of shipwreck beach (Poipu). Mahaulepu beach eastward at anytime. Pihea trail (Kokee state park) looking inland in the morning, looking towards the ocean in the afternoon. Salt pond beach in the afternoon. Polihale beach at sunset. As much of the Kalalau trail as possible."

Cool, I'm heading back to Kauai in a few months (wow, 5 and a half years after your last post, so you'll probably never read this but what the heck!) I'll definitely give these places a try. Thanks for the suggestions!!!

  3.
Thanks Dave! Hope Valley it is... I'll definitely have to check out that area. I'll also try to squeeze in some time at Carson Pass.

BTW - you have some nice shots in your Sierra Nevada portfolio (though I have to say your shots from Antarctica are my favorites of yours - REALLY impressive stuff!)

  4.
Great info - thanks Rachid!

Yeah, the last time I was in Tahoe was October 2007 and we just hit the peak of fall colors there by totalchance. Unfortunately, not having spent much time in Tahoe I wasn't sure of the best places to shoot. I'll definitely check out Hope Valley and Taylor Creek.

I haven't heard of Cave Rock - I'll have to check that out.

The other spot I'm going to look for (I've tried and failed in the past, but now I have GPS coordinates!) is Bonsai Rock which I've seen some really great shots of.

Thanks again!

  5.
I'll definitely check out Cascade Lake and Cascade Creek Falls. I'll check and see how long of a hike it is to Upper Velma!

Hope Valley, sweet, I'll definitely check that area out, and I'll be sure to check out Jon Paul's gallery; I know right where that Raley's is.

Thanks Yuri and Ed!

  6.
I'll be in South Lake Tahoe for 3 or 4 days in October and figured I'd get an early start on planning the trip. Just looking for some suggestions on where/when to shoot.
One place I've seen some great picks of is Bonzai Rock (I think...?) Anybody know how to find it?
Any and all info is appreciated!
7.
Bring both lenses - go with whichever one meets your needs the best. If you're able to get close, use the 24-105 (especially if the background is nice.)
I had good luck off the coast of Monterey last summer using a 30D with a 100-300mm lens. I never bothered changing lenses. They weren't allowed to bring the boat up close to the whales, but the whales did swim up close to us. At one point one of the whales swam right under the ship.
As for the polarizer or no polarizer debate. I'd suggest using it if it's sunny - you can easily shoot at ISO 400 on a sunny day using a polarizer and get a good enough shutter speed. If it's overcast, then you probably won't need it.
Good luck!

  8.
Wow, this is great! Thanks for all of the insight and suggestions everyone!

Sounds like there are a lot of good photo opportunities in the area - I'm really looking forward to the trip!

Thanks again all!
9.
The family and I will be staying in Portland for a few days in early March. I figured I'd hit a few of the popular and convenient waterfalls (Multnomah [duh], Latourell, Bridal Veil, etc.).

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Any good locations for sunrise/sunset (assuming it's not just overcast the entire time!), any spots that provide good views of Mount Hood? Any other lesser known places that would be good to shoot? I'm primarily interested in nature/landscape photography, but I like to shoot cityscapes and other things as well.

Some of the places I'm considering: Cannon Beach, Lost Lake, Stonehenge at Maryhill, Silver Falls State Park. Seems like a lot of driving, but if the locations are photogenic I don't mind.

Thanks!
10. Hmmm - I know I've heard that there is ferry service between Ohau and Maui...not sure if it's available between

any of the other islands or not (I imagine most are a little too far apart).

As for island hopping - you might want to try Go:

I was considering trying to do a hop over to the Big Island from Kauai on my last trip (didn't work out though)

and these guys seemed pretty reasonable.

    Good luck!

  11. I've wondered if I would have a difficult time trying to pack my tripod in my carry-on luggage (I've only had room for my tripod in my checked-in luggage). I could see how it might be looked at as a potential weapon, particularly if you have spiked feet on it - but it's still kind of rediculous. I'm not clear why they would have to clear your tripod through an agricultural inspection. Was it something else that was in the same bag, or maybe they thought the legs could be stuffed with some sort of agricultural substance. Strange.
  12. Lydgate State Park on the east side of the island is pretty good. I found another pretty good spot in Kapaa. If you drive north up highway 56 a ways near the northern end of Kapaa, there is a small side street that has a grass area with some great palm trees all lined up. It's right behind a small apartment building. You can spot it pretty easy from the highway. I think it might have been Kou Street or something like that.

Here are some shots, nothing great here, but you can see a couple of examples of the places I'm talking about. I took those pics all last September.

Number 001 and 007 are from Lydgate State Park.

Number 003 and 004 were taken from that small side street.

BTW, if you find some good spots - please share! I'm going to be going back in April (hopefully) for 7 or 10 days!
