John, thanks for clearing up my confusion.

Yes! Experiment! I suppose that in the end it comes down to personal preference. The photo in question simply left me wondering.

How do you measure impact? I've come to think of it as "Wow, I wish I'd done that," or getting a "Wow" when someone glances at one of my photos for the first time. I'm still learning of course, and the great thing about Photo.net is the variety of subjects and stunning photos from which to learn.

I will be very interested in seeing what other photographers think of the photo over time.

For my part, cutting off her head leaves me cold. Including the arm of the chair seems counterproductive (distracting) when you could have included the top of the head instead --unless of course, he cropped it this way in the frame. I wonder. The skin on the face seems blotchy, there's hair under her left eye, and the left arm...

Sometimes I get the impression that Mr. Peri does this kind of thing deliberately to see if he can provoke a negative response...

I was wondering where the picture was taken. The airplane is a DC-3 or "Gooney Bird" and I didn't think there were any flying. Maybe one or two in South America somewhere. But, this one has an American Flag on the tail and turboprop engines. A very fancy upgrade to a very old airplane. Anyway, nice shot and I like the fact that you included all of both wings!
  1. I have a very similar shot from last Spring, taken from the campground at the base of the Tower (http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7985858).

I think the challenge is to faithfully reproduce the colors and convey its massive size. Help with the challenge comes with a lower Sun angle (as Eric suggested) and including foreground (trees that help with scale) and background (clouds that give depth) and lower camera angle. Cropping out some of the sky will also help convey the Tower's size.

There is a road just outside the bottom of the frame in your picture, and it may well have been your intention to eliminate it for this shot, but it also helps convey the shear size of the structure. I'll upload an almost identical shot that will show you what I mean (http://photo.net/photodb/member-photos?user_id=4566581).

    Best regards!
