If the sky is blue, or has a large open blue area, meter your shot off the blue sky...

jeff,
Get a copy of Bryan Peterson's _Understanding Exposure - Revised Edition_.
I am also a newbie, and this book, in very few words, explains exposure very, very well.

Erin,
I am a beginner. Check out _Understanding Exposure - Revised Edition_ by Bryan Peterson. I will be purchasing his other books as well! He makes a lot of sense in a lot fewer words than some of the other books I have read...

Have a look at this site: http://www.lawdepot.com/contracts/model-release-form/?loc=CA
It is not free, nor is it expensive!

For those of us with restrictive budgets, Gimp on Linux runs a very close second behind PhotoShop... and it is free!

Thanks Stephen, Steve, Nate and William,
You guys have confirmed what I already knew, (I think... I just needed some convincing <grin>). Although I have
had this equipment for some time, I am still very much in the dark when it comes to the technical side of it all.
I am just starting to get back into photography, and I am actually paying attention to the manuals and various
instructional books, this time.
As to the filters: All I am looking at there, basically, are the CP, UV, and maybe ND filters. Nothing fancy,
maybe just the UV filters, as post production in Gimp or PS offers more options than I can handle at this point.
Again, thanks!

EDIT: Filters should read...

Novice looking for advice...
This is what I have:
My old EOS 750 body purchased back in '89 doesn't seem to function properly anymore, so I am waiting for my
new Canon XSi with the 18-55 EF-S lens to arrive.
I have the following lenses:
EF 50mm 1:1.8 ⵁ52
EF 35-70mm 1:3.5 – 4.5 A ⵁ52
EF 70-210mm 1:4 ⵁ58
...with these filters:
Elicar 52mm 8x cross
Soligor ⵁ52
I realize that I need to purchase some more filters, but my main question is about my current lenses. How good
are these lenses? I shoot mostly landscapes and wildlife.
Thanks,
Gary

I am just starting out as well. I have the XSi with the 17-55 kit lens as well as some older EF lens (f/3.5 and f/4). I have shot around 3000 pictures with this camera and my images are progressively getting better. Both in sharpness and composition. This camera is more than capable of producing very fine images, just look around this site and check out the pictures taken with the XSi. It is technique (and a good lens), that produce the great images. There are some very good images taken with kit lenses, but obviously the better lenses are just that... better! There are some great images around taken with Point-and-Shoot cameras.
As for enlarging images: What resolution were you at? I generally work at 240 or 300 ppi. For enlarging, I tried Genuine Fractals which did a very good job, even up to 400%. That program is definitely on my wish list... after some Canon L lenses of course!
Save some money and get the XSi or T1i, and put the money saved towards better glass.
My two cents!
