I experienced the same problem 2 months ago when I upgraded my D70 to the new firmware. I researched online and found other people having simliar problems and attributed it to a power issue. I sent it to Nikon and had them fix it in about 1 1/2 weeks. The technician said it was a problem with the metering system and had to replace the part.
Anyway, I tried everything myself to fix it before sending it to Nikon to no avail. I highly recommend sending it to Nikon if you have simliar problems.
