These orchid-like flowers are growing by the creek across from my
apartment. It looks rather ... tropical. What is it?

Actually I disagree and tend to think that helps make the shot. It would be a very ordinary portrait if the head were not cropped, but as it is, it focuses attention more on the lines and curves. I don't think of this as a 'portrait' per se.
