4 Months ago I bought the Canon 450D and have been happy with the performance of the camera but I am not happy with the range of the kit lens so I am looking into buying a new lens.
I used to have Tamron 28-200mm with my Minolta before I changed to digital and were really pleased with the lens. So I have been looking at the Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM but I do not know if this is completely overkill as I am planning to use it for landscape, safari pics, weddings and so on or if there is a better option available.
My plan is to later on support this lens with a 10-20mm lens, but that is in the future.

I am really interested in hearing how the L lens is perceived by other hobby photographers.

Thank you for the quick answer. I will try what you suggest next time. Where I see my biggest problem is shooting a picture where the subject is outside the range of the flash and I cant move any closer, still with a strong background light.
I tried to look in the menu of the camera to see if I could play with the exposure but I can not find anything.

I am facing a lot of problems with my new F50 camera when I wish to take pictures where there is a strong
background light. The result is the object I wish to photograph becomes very dark and I do not know what I can do
work around this. Please help me out.

Thank you Mark and Rainer, after posting I have been searching this forum (I know the wrong order of doing things) and I fear that the price and especially the weight of the lens will keep me thinking of the right choice of lens for me.
I have read a lot about how good the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is and I am starting to consider to get two lenses, one being the 70-200 and perhaps something like 10-20mm for wider pictures. But it sounds like the 70-200 is a good start.
