There have been shootings and other documented instances police abuse by Seattle Police Officers recently. Today I was photographing a group of about fifty protesters in downtown Seattle. It was pouring rain. I had a 40mm pancake on the K7 and I kept it out in the rain pointing it down when I wasn't shooting. Got it soaked for about two hours. Worked like a champ. I'm seriously thinking of buying another one. Will the K5 ever get under $1000? I did nothing to the image below but crop it.
What's going on? One of these "anarchists" had just smashed the window in a police car. It's a testament to the tense politics going on right now around these police shootings that the police didn't (as they usually do) unload pepper spray on everyone in sight.

Hmmm, I just noticed the lighter color circle on the guys upper arm and also one on the concrete at the top of the image. Could that be from rain drops on the lens glass?

Pop Photo disparaged the K 7 so it's interesting that they like the K5. I agree that it's not the best source for unbiased reviews.
DP review gave the K5 it's Gold Award, stating "The Pentax K-5's compact, solid body, generally well thought-out ergonomics, comprehensive feature set and excellent image quality, in both still and movie modes make it one of the best APS-C DSLRs currently on the market.

Shooting a rally today, I compared my K7 & DA40 with a guy who had a D7000 & 50mm F1.8. I'm biased but I think the K5 is a better value due to the build quality. I'll buy one before Christmas after the price comes down.

Here's a couple photos from today taken in the rain-that's what we do in Seattle.

There isn't much going on here so I thought I'd put this up. As some of you may recall I bought a K7 a couple months ago. My first DSLR. Since it's been raining a lot here in Seattle I haven't used it as much as I'd like on the street.

I have used it enough to know that I don't like zoom lenses with multi-apertures so quickly sold the 18-55wr & 50-200wr and now have the three DA pancakes (21,40,70). I was in a cafe today and shot these pix of the staff with the DA40. ISO 400, F2.8 at about 1/8th second. I shot a photo of a menu at 1/8th second and the print is nice and sharp. All images cropped a little and run through Elements quick fix. To most of you guys this is old hat. But for me images this sharp at 1/8th second hand held is amazing

Here's a link to Pentax and a "What's in the box" page for this lens.
http://tinyurl.com/34ky32o
It shows an image of a DVD and:

I made that trip through the Canyon in July 1988 with Grand Canyon Expeditions http://www.gcex.com/.
It is a great experience. I took along disposable film cameras and was glad I did. Two of my fellow travelers ruined SLRs with water.
If I was to make that trip this year I'd take my Canon Elph, a couple extra batteries and SD cards. Keep it all in a pocket-able ziplock bag. Edit the images during down time to save space if needed.
Don't waste your vacation time messing with a bunch of equipment.

Thanks for your help Jim, I'll look into the Corel. On reflection, although I'm very frustrated with Adobe, I've already invested so much time in learning it I'll be only hurting myself by making a change right now. But the next time I'm ready to change software I will definitely consider leaving Adobe behind.

Thanks Jim, I registered to an email address that I use for these purposes and it stopped the pop up. However the organizer that I had running when I registered then stopped working-wouldn't open-I tried everything. I finally had to reinstall the software. Sheeeez!I upgraded from Elements 6 and this version is very buggy compared to that. Anyone have suggestions for affordable photo editing software that has a layers function? I feel bullied by Adobe for forcing me to register. I bought this software to edit photos not to join an Adobe community against my will.

I recently bought Elements 8 at a nice price. I have not registered at their site as there is no benefit for me in doing so. When I open a new album I get a pop up urging me to sign in, or register, at their site. Too often I get pop ups in the lower left of the screen urging me to upgrade. I am moving beyond being annoyed by these intrusions to feeling angry and abused.
Anyone know a way to stop these popups?
Anyone know of another photo editor comparable to this in affordability and function-especially providing layers?
