1.
I have owned an XSi, 40D, 50D and 5D.
Based on what you say you shoot, I would buy the 5D and sell the EFS 10-22 - if landscapes are your thing. You just can't beat full frame.
I use a 50D with my 40D as backup. I like the 50D better. I love the LCD and the way it handles... but the 40D is also very nice and can save you money.
If you're going to travel with your camera, I would buy the XSi. It's small and light and image quality-wise as good as any of the above (well maybe not the 5D).

 2.
Since you have the Rebel XSi - I would highly recommend the EFS 60mm 2.8 Macro (unbelievably sharp and great bokeh) and the Tamron 70-200 2.8 or (if you can afford it) Canon 70-200 2.8 for the sports captures. You might also try the 85 1.8 for sports. I take pictures of my kid's basketball game all the time with the 85 1.8 and they come out sharp. The lens is very fast too, for low light venues.

 3.
I guess my question isn't clear...

I keep hearing that one should have backup lenses as well as backup bodies. So I have two 40D's... but I don't have backups to all of my lenses. Meaning if my 17-55 goes kaput! then I have nothing wider than the 35L.

 4.
Okay folks... weigh in on this one...

Assuming one has 2 camera bodies (I have 2 40Ds) would it be more important to have moderate quality lenses with moderate quality backup lenses or just a set of good lenses that don't necessarily have backups.
So for instance...
2 - 40D's
One 17-55 2.8IS (could translate into two Tamron 17-50 2.8 lenses)
One 35L 1.4 (could translate into two or three fast primes)
One 70-200mm 2.8 IS (could translate into one 85 1.8 and one 135 f/2)

 5.
I made my decision and sold the 5D... I'm sure I'll revisit it in the future.
I'm going to go with either 2 40D's or 1 40D and a 30D. I am also going to sell the 35L and get the Sigma 30mm 1.4.
Economy just forcing this decision for me. I'm sure someday I'll go back to the 5D. It's a great camera.

Thanks for all of your input.

 6.
I totally appreciate your input WW.
Re: wide lens --- on the 40D my widest lens would be the 17-55 2.8 IS. So wide enough.
It seems that the resounding sentiment is to keep the 5D. And I do love it.

However, WW, you are quite right about my liking to try things out. I bought the 5D used. Thought I would give it a try. It is a wonderful camera. But to your point - it doesn't necessarily make my photos better. Better than say another 40D. In fact, in some ways, it probably complicates things. Only because of having FF and cropped together.
I am still discovering my style. Most of my weddings are small, thus making my primes my main tools. However, I am going to be doing some second shooting in larger venues.... so I suspect the 70-200 will come in handy.

I love this forum.... :)

 7.
WW and others:

Thought about this overnight... and have a new thought.
Sell my 5D for about $1200.
Buy a used 40D for about $600.
Sell my Tamron 70-200 for about $600
Buy a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS for about $1200.

Then I would be shooting with:
2 x 40D
35L
17-55 2.8 IS
50 1.4
85 1.8
70-200 2.8 IS

I know there will be a lot of people who say don't sell the 5D. I'm new to wedding photography and am trying to stretch my budget as much as possible to have two really good kits to shoot with.

Thanks,
Diane

 8.
I think because of the way the 5D handles noise, I would use it for the majority of portraits, details, pj stuff - reception, the wedding. That said, I can also see using the 40D during a reception because of the low light AF ability.
My thoughts are that I would keep the 70-200 on the 40D. A 24-70 on the 5D. Use primes on both depending on what I'm looking for.
My preference is primes. Love them. Just too chicken to use only primes at a wedding.

 9.
Well in my original post I wrote that I don't want to spend more money. I am looking at doing a shakeup trading the existing lenses I have.
So the real question is... whether it makes sense trading in the 17-55 since it only works on one camera. All the other lenses work on both cameras.
Should I have a zoom on the 5D.

 10.
I just bought a 5D so it's making me rethink my lens lineup.

Right now I have a 40D and a 5D.

Lenses I own:

35L
17-55 2.8
50 1.4
85 1.8
Tamron 70-200 2.8

Would you sell anything, trade anything to add a different lens? For instance, I have given some thought to trading my 17-55 for a 16-35 (that way it would work on both cameras). I've thought about trading the 35L for a 24-70.

I don't really want to spend more money right now so it would simply be a case of trading etc.

Would love to hear you all weigh in....
