  1. I use exactly the same set up these days and the 18-70 is a great lens. One thing to consider, a 'pro' lens will be heavier and bulkier to carry around and might not balance as well on the D70. I was tempted to supplement with the 70-200 2.8 nikkor but declined. Not because I wasn't happy with its performance, (far from it), but it was heavy and cumbersome to carry around. Bjorn Rorslett rates it 4 out of 5 which means, in by his definition, "Very good, quality results can be expected. Such lenses can safely be applied to professional photography"
  2. The camera estimates how many exposures would fit in the remaining space on the CF card. Since the size of JPEGs differ from picture to picture (check file size on your computer once downloaded), the camera takes a conservative estimate on how many large JPEGs it can fit.
  3. I would keep the F4 any day. It's rugged and built to last. It is a beaty and anyone who says the autofocus is slow haven't used it. Since you intend to use it on a tripod most of the time, autofocus capabilitis aren't an issue.

You can remove the extra battery compartment and replace it with a plain vanilla F4 grip. After that, it is quite a light camera.
