Nick, the problem with having a 15s exposure for a sky that was fairly bright (which it was, including the rainbow), is that if the lightning strikes, for say, a quarter of a second, the contrast between the sky and the lightning will be very low.. The lightning will be very dim (and hardly visible). The best solution would have been to use a much lighter ND filter and f/8.0 or thereabouts, which I didn't have. Or to get the picture in proper focus anyway (the f/1.8 wasn't the real problem, but my lack of attention to it :).
  2. I got this by taking a whole bunch (~300) of shots (of which about 8 caught ligntning), each around 1-2s, at f/1.8 using a 128x ND filter. I really should have used a lighter ND, but I didn't have one. Without the ND, f/22 was overexposed at 2s. The f/1.8 combined with me running around trying to keep things dry led me to screw up and let it get out of focus. As for the house in the lower left, I need to crop it (the image above is completely uncropped/untouched)... -Justin
