I'm getting the opportunity to photograph 20 teams for a local hockey club. The club has been taking pictures with
P/S cameras until now so they don't expect much but I do want to take the best pictures possible. The session will
take place on the ice, inside with artificial lighting from above. There will be about 20-25 players in three rows (first
row sitting on a bench, second row standing on the ice, third row standing on a bench).
I'm absolutely new to flash photography but I'm a fast learner and I have some decent equipment: KonicaMinolta 7D
SLR, KM 28-75/2.8 lens and 2x Elinchrom FX400 flash units, 80cm white umbrella, 80cm silver umbrella and a
65cmx65cm softbox. I have 2 standard stands but also a more expensive stand that can lift one of the flashes to a
hight of about 3m.
I also have a Lowell Rifa-Light EHF 750W hotlight (softbox, 3200 Kelvin) that I possibly could use, but the color
temperatures does not match, so I don't know if the flashes and the hotlight are compatible. I also suspect that the
light output of the hotlight is way below what would be needed if used as a backlight for example.
I was thinking of using the following camera settings: 1/250s, F11, ISO100, RAW. I will adjust the flashes until I get
the desired exposure. Higher ISO if there is insufficient light.
Where should I position the flashes and at what hight? Same power output from both flashes, can/should I use the
hotlight? Any other suggestions? I have spent the whole day looking for info on the net but haven't had any luck so
far.
