In this case I needed to show as much shoulders as possible. In CV big male shoulders is a good thing, in my opinion. Your tighter crop is also good.

I like what you have done with the smile. Originail may not be perfect. It is kind of self confident smile. 

I wanted the person to look more self confident in this picture than relaxed.

My crop was not that tight because I needed to show his broad shoulders.

Your comments are highly appreciated. I often want to use quite hard light and create contrast. I agree the shadow would be too strong if it would be mentioned to be passport picture.

I tried to empahazise her eyes with this picture using extremely shallow DOF; her eyes are the most amazing!
