Shot of the bride after getting ready.

-

Here's an attempt, keping the color. I blurred out the girls some, and took out some distracting lights in the background. Changed the colors a bit to warm it up.

From a wedding last weekend. Took the bride and groom shots on the beach (sun was brutal!).

Thanks for the comments! The son (groomsman) didn't have his jacket at all that day. Must have left it in the car. Thanks for the posing advice, I'm really trying to improve that aspect.

I shot a City Hall wedding last week and was hoping to get some feedback. I posted a few pictures on my blog (although there are of course many more). Pictures here. I was particularly trying to improve my posing for formal portraits and lighting for indoor weddings (most of my full weddings have been outdoors).
Advice and comments appreciated!

Right, of course. I was picturing using an umbrella or large diffuser, but bouncing off the corner or ceiling would be simpler.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the detailed answer. Very helpful!
So during a reception, would you recommending setting up the Vivitar 285 (... SB800 or SB900) on a lightstand in a corner out of the way from activity, pointing to the dance floor?

-

Great images John, and very useful information. In addition to my 2 SB800's I also have a Nikon SB-28DX Speedlight. Would this be strong enough or should I just invest in another SB800?

Any recommendations for simple to use lightstands?

Thanks for everyone's input. I agree that I wouldn't use the wide-angle often- just a few shots per wedding. Probably not worth the money at this point.

I could afford an upgrade to the D90, especially since I can sell the D100 body for a few hundred bucks. I like that the bodies would then be very similar, but the primary camera would be much better (especially at low light). I understand that the colors are much milder on the D90, so post-editing would be different for the two cameras. I think I would prefer getting a D90 rather than a second D80 though, to get that higher ISO capability.

John- I would also like to look into off-camera flash options, particularly for dark receptions. My only hesitation there, is that I worry I would feel restricted with a flash on a light stand. Is it difficult to move around with one, or do you only use it for certain shots (ie bride-groom dancing etc.)?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I have been shooting wedding for about a year now (8 total, 2 as a second shooter). I am thinking I can afford a small upgrade to my equipment setup. This is what I currently use:

Nikon D80
Nikon D100

2X SB-800's

Tamron 17-50mm/f2.8
Sigma 70-200mm/f2.8
Nikon 50mm/f1.8
- I also have a Nikkor 18-55mm and a Nikkor 55-200mm which are really just for outdoor backup.

Do people think a wide-angle lens would add to my system? Like a Tokina 12-24mm or a Sigma 10-20mm? I could also upgrade my D100 to a D200 or D80. I would love to upgrade to a D300, but it is not currently in my budget. Alternatively, I could hold off for now until I could afford that upgrade. Any other suggestions?

Here is one from this past weekend. Shot with Nikon D80, Tamron 18-50mm, w/SB800 fill flash.

What exactly is a dressmaker suit? Would a black dress be appropriate?
-
I am shooting a black tie event this weekend, and was wondering what people recommended female photographers wear. Black pantsuit?
-
Thanks for the feedback so far!
I hadn't noticed major problems with white balance. Could you give an example of a photo where the green cast is
obvious?
I have experience photographing weddings, don't worry :). Also, I am only going to be the second shooter at the ones
this coming weekend. But, I love to get feedback from each shoot as I'm developing as a photographer, even the
informal candid ones, so that I can improve each time. So, the more feedback the better!

Hi everyone,
I shot a HS reunion this past weekend (for free) and was hoping to get some feedback. It was an informal picnic with families. Any advice
would be great because I have two weddings coming up this weekend!

Thanks for all the responses! I like the idea of the Black Rapid strap and the hand strap, so I'll check those out.

Hi everyone,
This may sound silly, but when I carry my camera (Nikon D80) with flash (SB 800) around my neck, the weight of the flash makes it
constantly tip forward. If I put the strap around my opposite shoulder it helps, but I feel like I am less quick with the camera.
Does anyone have any helpful hints to carrying your primary camera?

I really like SmugMug!

Thanks for the advice Raymond. I'm going through and fixing the "blue dress" mistake in all of the photos.

The event login section will have full albums from specific events- most of which will be password protected. For the wedding that it is on there, the bride and groom were fine with it being accessible to everyone.

Thanks CJ,
Are there any pictures in particular that you would suggest removing?

Thanks for the feedback, Debbie. If you want to look at the full album, it is located under "events login" on my website:
