1.
If the image is under exposed I had a friend recently with a similar problem (not a D300) and the cause we that the lens aperture pin/connection in the camera was bent. When you mount a lens and rotate the lens to lock it in place the lens mount makes contact with this pin which controls the apature.

00UioA-179647784.jpg.85bcf5f492540d0adc8dc26d8e3bda2e.jpg

 2.
Thanks everyone for their replies. I'm considering taking the advice to hold off as long as I can at which point I may have decide which camera to go for D300 / D700.
The main purpose is for weddings/portraits. I did my first wedding two week ago and borrowed a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 I got some exceptional shots, however I found that during the ceremony I was just a little too close to use the 50mm lens for a full length shot hence the interest in the 35mm (the ceremony was on a pontoon therefore moving back was not an option).
I don't have any prime lens, the other lens I used during the wedding were the Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR , Tokina 12-24 AT-X PRO f/4 & the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 I was pleased with the shots and having the 18-200 zoom give me the versatility and got me out of a number of tricky satiations.
Note: I also intend to get the 50mm f/1.8 lens.

 3.
Which lens should I go for, I currently have a D70s and I'm looking to purchase a 35mm prime lens, however I'm also looking/hoping to upgarding to either D300 or D700 within 6 - 12 months. so I would like to know your views regaring the 2 lens mentions ? Do I go for the f/1.8G wich will work with my D70 and the D300 (DX format) or should I go with the f/2D which will also work with all my options (incl. D700).
