Thanks much everyone for your help. The image actually may or may not have been edited. I didn't edit it but it got sent out and I'm assuming they did something with it but it's pretty close to what it looked like originally. I did have it set to a user def. in which I had set the sharpness to 5, contrast up 1 and sat. up 1, but once I realized how crazy the images were turning out i set it back to standard. slightly better but still funky. I work at the place i bought it from so I've already exchanged, maybe i'll switch the card too cause it had def been formatted. I generally don't use a pop up either but this was a real quick shoot for a friend in a gym, bright lights, and still real slow recycle time at program and manual. high iso NR was off. long exp NR was on AUTO, possible reasoning for the slow recycle.
Has anyone heard of the 40d not working as well with older flashes? ie 420ex?

It doesn't let me shoot while it says busy or focus or anything, and I'm using a brand new san disk 133x speed
cf. I don't expect it to know the white balance in a club with random lights going off but what I don't know is
why the same thing I did with my 20d is not working. I got well balanced images shooting around 1/4 of a sec with
a 17-85 somewhere in between 3.5-5.6 using the 420ex. I shot in manual so I changed the shutter depending on the
lights but I never had such red images, even shooting under red lights.
Also. I didn't add any saturation or contrast. Thats the problem, it looked like that originally, really red and
just really bad color overall.

Here is an example and this is after some editing.

I recently bought a 40D and I'm sadly unimpressed and I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problems I
have or if it's just my body. When using the built in flash on both manual and program, in a brightly lit
environment, the camera took at least 6 secs. to recycle saying 'BUSY'. I don't think I should be having this
problem, and it def. didn't happen with my 20d. I also do a lot of club shots and have found that the images are
consistently extra red, or magenta. I'm shooting with the same setting as I did my 20d, with a 420ex and I had
great images with it but not with the 40d. Has anyone heard of these problems occurring? Funky color balance and
slow recycling time with the built in flash? Thanks!
