1.
In your situation, I will get less used 5D III ( since 5DIV is out, there are lot of 5DIII for sale)
For 16-35, I will stick to f/4 version coz it is newer lens with latest technology and better performance in corners compared to f/2.8. I will say please go through comparison of 16-35 f/2.8 and f/4. and since you are going to shoot estates and all, I assume that you wont be needing f/2.8 much.

 2.
Hi James
I used Sigma for 6 years which was mine. 10-18 belongs to my firend, which I used couple of times myself plus we compare whatever we shot together on outings. That's when I noticed that it is not that great and my 10-18 owner friend also agrees with me
I only parted with Sigma when I shifted to full frame.
Prasad

 3.
Go for Sigma, it is surely better that canon 10-18.
I have used both btw... and was using sigma for more than 6 years without a complaint.
It survived even a fall on rock also. So in both the aspects, image quality and built Sigma is better.
btw you can you can read about tokina 11-16 also before making decision. It is a good lens if you are looking for faster lens.
Not really useful for landscape but will be helpful in low for other purposes (if you have any)

 4.
Hey Guys
Right now I am using canon 50D and 400D. I have used film camera in early days (while studying in the collage) and would like to enjoy that again. So I was thinking about buying used one.
So now the question is which canon film camera will give me autofocus with the lenses I have right now? The lenses I have right now :
canon 50mm 1.8 II (plastic mount) , canon 100-400 L IS, sigam 10-20 and tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (I really don't know if any canon film camera will work with my tamy and sigma!)
can you guys please throw some light on this, would like to know what features of these lenses the camera will support or wont support
5.
I got my used 100-400 for $1150 last year, and I think I will never regret it. Mine was used for almost 3 years when I got it, but the previous owner has taken care of it like a baby, I know this line is used millions of time but "it was like a new one" . I use 50D too, it goes fabulous with it.
See if you can find something similar, best of luck
happy shooting
prasad

 6.
ultra wide with big appertures? it is fine for low light but what about shallow DOF? will it be good for big churches? I know you already mentioned that you are going to shoot hand held but still I will say please give a second thought to carrying tripod. Even with any ultra wide. In low light tripod is your best friend.
7.
@Dan: mostly using 100-400 L (which has IS), but never used liveview after buying 50 D :P. One more strange thing is both the batteries are showing full charging signal in less than 5 minuts after putting it for charging
@Puppy : Maybe you are right , need to change batteries. But this draining is not gradual, suddenly started from when I went for shoot last time. I thought I maybe forgot to charge and negelected. But it happened again today.
Let me check with some other charger as I mentioned earlier. Plus it is still in Canon Warranty so that hope is still there (need to check if they cover this issues) Thanks a lot for the reply Dan, Puppy and Harry.

 8.
Hi Guys
Using 50D with one canon battery (came with camera) and one lenmar (third party, got at fry's). Using it for more than year. Suddenly both the batteries are draining very fast. Lenmar in 15 minuts and canon in 30 even after chrging it overnight. Anyone else experienced this? please share exp and solutions.
will try using friend's charger how it works though. thanks in advance.

 9.
Hi folks
Just very curious about the mirror lenses. Want to know if anybody is using mirror lens on canon 50D.
Please share your opinions, and post shots if possible. I know that these are very cheap lenses and easily spend that much. But don't really want to totally waste all the money :) LOL and curse myself. hehe
thanks in advance
10.
Hey Jessica
I was also in the same condition. I have 400D which was the only camera last year. I was also in the same dilemma. Everybody was saying that I should get the good glasses first. So I went to Canon and tried some L series glasses on the Camera. It was great but still don't know why I was not ready to invest in the lenses to use with 400D. Then I tried 50D just like that and was impressed by it's ISO performance, focusing speed, weight and grip/feel. So just jumped on it. Now I using 50D with better lenses. but ... you will feel that with the same lens setup 50D gives very good performance if compared to 400D/350D etc. So by my own experience I will say just go for 50D then you will exactly know which glass you need according to that. Maybe you will be happy with the same glasses you have. I just want to say that even if you are using superior lenses, the body you are using matters a lot. And yess, don't part with your old camera, it will be very useful as a back up as I am using my 400D till date.
11.
Heyyy, thanks for every responce.
@Kerry - hey Kerry, I have 18-50 non IS kit lens, sigma10-20 f/4-5.6, 55-250, 100-400 L IS, and on fast side 50mm f/1.8, and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. I have Tripod (but not that great, it is a vivitar - 3600). Mostly I shoot landscapes, birds and street. Just tried shooting moon with 100-400 and got horrible results, then started learning/reading about night photography. Came across the thing that we can set the shutterspeed as slow like 30 minutes or more, Plus one day one friend also asked about how to set exposures like these long. He just mentioned the term 'exposure delay' don't know it is right or not for the thing he want because never heard of it.
now the moto to post the question! - Want to shoot star trails and the speedlight both. I tried shooting speedlights also and was quite successful also but realy can't figure out how to shoot star trails and similar shots with setting long shutterspeed. That's why thought to post the question on PN which is always the best way to get answers.

 12.
Hi guys
just wanted to do night photography. googeled a lot about long exposures and surphrisingly got nothing. Will you guys please help me on that. I welcome every information I can get on night photography. I use canon 50D. so please please tell me how to set long shutterspeed also.
Thanks in advance
prasad

 13.
thanks Nathan
it helps a lot. I tried it with MF and what a magic, it's shooting as perfect as it use to but not with AF. So now atleast I can say something is going wrong when I shoot in AF. And I am not lifting the fingel after locking the focus, I am keeping the shutter depressed after focusing. Let's see, tomo going for outdoor shoot, will try some other things also otherwise update the firmware and see. Hope for the best. thanks a lot
14.
Thanks guys,
thanks for quick replies, I checked, so .... it's not 2 seconds time delay on, it's not a mirror lock up, like Juergen said, after locking the focus it's taking time to release the shutter, not a second but just a fraction of second which matters a lot for me as my most favourite is birding. @JDM - I am facing it even in nice crisp light :( So I am going to give a try what Jason Hall said. Will update once tried that.
thanks again everybody for quick help,
happy shooting
15.
I am agreed with G Dan Mitchell (as usual)
Just came back after having a shoot of baby boy of my friend (19 days old), you are asking about the f4 lens + f1.8 lens, but some hours ago I was stuggeling even with the f2.8 (tamron 17-50) in low light (interiour) when my plastic fantacy - 50mm f/1.8 saved me. I was nice to have fast lenses in low light. As you said you already have 50mm f/1.8 so I will say that just wait for some time, shoot with 70-200 f/4 and 50mm 1.8, and if you think that 50mm is shorter for your purpose, go for 85mm f1.8
16.
HI Guys
I use Canon 50D. For last some of the days, facing strange problem.
Whenever hitting the shutter it's taking a while to release a shutter. I don't know it matters or not, but tried all the lenses I have, but it is the same. I never shoot in bust mode (dontinuous shoot mode) but when I started shooting so (for the dirt track race) I think after that I am facing this problem. In both , single shoot mode and continuous shoot mode. The Camera is still in the warranty period so I can get it fixed from Canon, but just wanted to know what is this problem? and when it can occur with Camera. would like to know your experiences if you have.
thanks in advance
happy shooting prasad

 17.
Hey Levon
I will also say that lens is most important part of photographers life, your PC is not that bad, as other said you just need to get goo RAM, get external hard disc and from the rest get the lens you can. And most important thing is it's not a good Idea to edit the photographs on laptop screen, they are not accurate at all like Good Old CRT monitors (hope you have CRT)
happy shooting
prasad

 18.
you have two ways, IMHO
1. Just wait with your kit lens (if you can for right now) and save for the big guy - 5D II
2. if you are desparate to get good lens, buy Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for now which let you shoot in low light and give you better quality. By buying Tamron you will save some money which I think you should, because spending for canon 17-55 when you are going to upgrade for full frame is not good idea. I think. You can use saved money for 5D II and better lenses.
24-70 is undoubtedly great lens but not right now for you as you are using crop body. So I will say - get a Tamron now, save money, get a 5DII and 24-70 whenever you can.
happy shooting prasad

 19.
if it is the first lens you are going to buy, go for tamron 17-50 f2.8. use it for a some time. Then decide what else you need. If tight on the budget just go for canon18-50 IS and do the same after that.
happy shooting
20.
as you said you are not a fultime bird photographer don't go for 400, not having any tele (prime or soom both) is also will be a good reason to avoid 400 prime. I would suggest defenatly 100-400. True that zoom can't perform like prime but 100-400 is not ordinary lens. Remember it is also L series lens. Talking about the weight - I was also in the same confusion befor buying. But After using it for 3-4 days, weight does not bother me or stopping me from using 100-400.
happyy shooting

 21.
I was there only 18-55 on my 400D because i was toatally out of budget, that's why I discover that this lens is quite enough to learn the camera. So if you have money just spend it in roaming around for shooting. (this is already covered by G Dan Mitchell sir but would like to say what i experienced)
best of luch with your 50D, it's a very good camera, i am also proud owner of 50D :)
