The 1DX is announced but not yet released, and the 5DIII is (at this point) no more than forum-generated vapourware, so comparisons are – how can I put it most kindly? – premature.

—Welcome to the internets.

The new G1X looks like fun, I'll play with that till the vapourware comes to life.

  2.
I could see a split in the 5D line up, one for video, one for stills. Or, maybe, a new camera, I think someone said 3D. I'm in no rush, I'll wait for the 5D3 to show, and if it's not what we want, then we'll buy a 5D2 for the cheap. But I want The One Camera with the lowest noise and best DR. Video, meh, not for me outside of toying around.

  3. Some great thoughts and ideas, thanks. I agree with Marcus about the 5D3 being a fine art/studio/portrait camera with a

high MP count. With the 1Dx being the sport fast camera that leaves a gap between it and the 7D, and that gap is a

camera for image quality. Huge prints, massive DR, and lowest noise possible —my camera. If the 5d3 is in the 30+ mp

range, that will make for some huge RAW files; 100 files on an eight gig card. The RAW files off the 50D run 15-19 megs.

The 5D3 better be phenomenal. Many will pass up the 5D2 $1999 deals available right now, but if the DR is just a bit

better, lower noise, I'll pay the extra for the extra.

  4.
I'll assume you meant 5d3 in your last sentence Scott. The 5D3 I'm assuming will have a superabundant amount of megapixels; the 15 from the 50D is plenty for me. I want DR and low noise.
Scott, are you saying the 5D2 files are easier to work with vs. a 1Ds3? In what way? DR?
5D3 with 1-series AF, 10-15 mp, and DR like the best films had or better —joy.

Back to waiting for The One.

  5.
Coming from a 50D here. As the title lists, and considering no one has used those cameras, of the two which camera do you think will have the least noise (real iso range use 400-3200), most dynamic range (50d blows out too fast, like cheap expired drugstore film)? I care nothing about FPS and MPs.

50D is nice, but it's time for FF. No compromise, don't drag price in to this, I know the prices.

My style of shooting and all that is moot, I care about decent iso and dynamic range. Lots of L 1.2s and the usual camera body fodder here.

So lets compare cameras that are not available to cameras that don't exist (that's what the internet was built for).

  6.
I've let my 50D sit in the car for a few hours in -20°c temps with a fully charged battery, but the camera would not turn on. I removed the battery and warmed it, but left the body in the cold; warming the battery allowed the camera to function. I've used my 50D in temps down to -32°c without issues, just keep the battery warm.

It does not take too long for the battery to quit in cold temps.

  7.
Hi,

I want to go to Lion and want to know if DPP works with Lion. I did a search on the internets and can't seem to find anything too current. What does the EOS forum have to say?

Thanks.

  8.
Hi,

Some people here will recognize the name Art Haykin. He was an active photo.net member up to a few years ago. I received an email from a member of Art's family today announcing Art's passing on January 2nd, 2011.

I had many off topic emails with Art over the years, he was a smart guy.

  9.
I have the 50/1.4, 50/1.2, and the 85/1.8. The bokey on the 50/1.4 is so-so. The 85 and 50L's bokey are much better.

The 85 might be too long for group shots. For single person shots the 85 is awesome wide open and it's bokey is stellar. The ultimate bokey lens is the 200/2.0L.

  10.
Hi.

This is what happened:

1. Shooting images.
2. Battery dies and the camera saves the last image.
3. Replace battery with my other original Canon battery.
4. Shoot more images.
5. Connect 50D to iMac via USB.
6. EOS utility fails to open after about a minute.
7. Switch the CF card for another identiacal CF card; EOS utility opens.
8. Format other "bad" CF card and switch it back into the camera
9. EOS utility opens —sans images because I formatted :(

Now, is this just a freak thing? What I want to know is this: can I trust this CF card, or should I toss it? I bought the card at BH, so I'll assume it's a legitimate card. I bought it in September; it's a SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s 8GB.

Thanks.
