When shadows are very deep and dark, the human eye does not see detail in the shadow area. To pull detail out of the shadow by any type of manipulation either in a darkroom or PS and make sure you have all the detail in the highlights is not how we see when there is strongly uneven lighting. To change it so there is detail in both highlights and shadows pulls it into the realm of 'medium' and makes it mediocre -- no excitement from the contrast which is superb here.

Too often, photographs that might have had an element of excitement and wow about them have been worked into this urge for a curious 'zone' system that evens everything out. What a loss.

Be sure that a print is made and put away for each sister or in the future when they become aware of the glory of this photograph, there will be war. Each will want the photo.

I viewed this earler when it appeared in the "top 30". Aside from your timing, which was excellent, it is the tension evident in the penguins focusing on maintaining their balance that keeps my attention.

I, too, enjoy "Dejected Penguin". You do work that creates a sense of envy.

This photograph has drawn me back repeatedly. I prefer the composition as-is. Let my mind wander around the bycycles. The tonality is right. Many times on overcast days I have walked past scenes like this. For me, they are peaceful.

I spend a couple of months each year in Japan and always bring home many photographs. Your photograph is what I'm tyring for. I think that for those who have spent any time in Tokyo, your composition works because it gives a sense of place.

I have moved this to wallpaper on my computer. Students and fellow faculty have asked if I took it. I wish.
