1.
Dear Thomas,

Thanks very much for your advice. Yes, we are getting close to the date of our backpacking trip. I have bought 4-season tent, and -20F sleep bag. We have already had initial testing use on these, and they are great. The weight of backpack is an issue, we need to hike light, but also need minimal necessary stuff. My trip partner just had a one night stay test in the area, and find out we also need down pants during the night when we try to make night photographs.

Thanks all for your very helpful advices and information.

 2.
Dear all,

I am planing to do two backpacking photography trips in near future, one in the Eastern Sierra of California in end of October this year, and the other one in the Westland mountain area of the South Island of New Zealand next year.

I am looking for a two-person tent that is good for this backpacking photography purpose. It should be light weight, wind and water proof, and suitable for cold weather condition. In both trips, the temperature could be as low as below 0 Celsius degree in the camping location.

For these two trips, one we will hike about 10 KM from car pack to the camping location and stay 3 nights there, and the other one we will climb to a mountain of the height 2300 meters with elevation gain of 2000 meters and stay one night up the mountain. So we will carry all our camping and camera gears, and foods etc.
May anyone who has good experience for backpacking give me some suggestions and advice for what type of tents I should buy for this purpose?

Thanks very much.

 3.
Dear all,

Thanks very much for all your responses, which are very helpful. Basically, the insurance policy they quote for my case is as follows:

"The way we will pay the claim will depend on the type of cover you have chosen. If you do not have Specified Item Cover, we will, after allowing for wear, tear, and depreciation, choose between repairing or replacing the property, or paying you its value in cash."

During my discussion with them, they could not justify how they get such 20% depreciation per year. By the end, they just asked me to submit a formal request for re-evaluation.

 4.
Dear all,

I recently traveled to New Zealand for landscape photography. I primarily used my Canon 5D Mark II with lens Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. However, I had an accident during the trip and my this lens was broken into two separate pieces.

After I came back, I made a claim for this broken lens to my Travel Insurance Company (I always buy travel insurance that includes camera related equipment cover). According to my bought insurance policy, it has up to AUD$4000 cover for my camera equipment.

My lens is 4 years old, I purchased at the price AUD$1645.00, and Canon Camera Service in Sydney provided a repair quote is AUD$1130.18, and currently such used lens costs between $1400-1600 in Australia.

I thought I should have no problem to be compensated by the insurance company with something between $1130.18 to $1645.00.

But surprisingly, the insurance only provided me $573.76. They said according to their "policy", they view this lens to have 20% depreciation each year! But the policy I bought from them has completely no such policy. I asked them to point out where the policy came from, why not in the policy statement. They could not answer my question, and finally, they agreed to send my case to their Internal Dispute Resolution to re-evaluate my case. I will have a chance to provide further information to support my complaint.

Now my question here is: Do you have any idea how I can convince the committee that 20% depreciation per year for this high end Canon lens is not right?

Thanks very much for your help.

5.
Dear all,

I am an amateur landscape photographer, I always use my Canon 5D Mark II to take landscape photos. However, from time to time, I found I probably also wanted a compact camera to take some good quality photos when I was traveling to record some interesting people and events. Sometimes, I may also use it to take landscape photos when my 5D Mark II is not with me.

Can anyone recommend some good compact but high quality camera to me? I am thinking Lumix LX5 (with a Leica 24mm lens). Will this be a good option?

Thanks in advance.

 6.
Dear all,

I got a problem about photo transfer from camera. Hope someone can help.
I always use cable to connect my 5D Mark II to my macBook Air to transfer photos in 5D Mark II into my MacBook Air computer. As long as I turn the switch on in the camera, the EOS Utility screen will appear in my computer and some options also appear in the camera LCD screen. Then I can do photo transfer by selecting "New photos" or "All photos" etc, without any problem.

But today, when I tried to transfer the photos, nothing appeared in the camera, as well as in the computer. Has anyone ever faced a similar problem like this? and how to fix it?

Many thanks,

 7.
My current berno tripod is not working (one leg is completely loosen). Instead of fixing it, I am considering to buy a gitzo tripod. The one I am considering is Gitzo GT2531EX. But I don't really know much about this tripod, hope photographers here who have experiences of using it can give me some information and advices.

I travel a lot, I need a relatively light weight tripod, Gitzo GT2531EX is about 1.8kg, so this one seems OK to me. I also need a small minimum height sometimes for taking photographs, this one has a minimum height of 3 cm.

I am using 5D Mark II and lenses are 16-35mm f/2.8II and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.

Anothere quesiton: may I use my current berno ball head to this gitzo tripod? My current berno ball head is able to support
upto 20kg. Thanks very much for your input.

Yan

 8.
Dear all,
After successfully selling some of my landscape photos through local art exhibitions in recent years, I am now considering to build my own photo website. I did some investigations and now tend to use Zenfolio as the host and start with either Unlimited or Premium plan. I have a question, which may be too simple, but I hope to get advices from experienced people:
I like to have my own domain name such as http://yanzhangphotography.com (or something like that), how and where I can get my own domain name, and then put it into my Zenfolio hosted website?
Thanks very much.
9.
I will participate in a landscape photography workshop in November 2011 in Rocky Mountains (Alberta, Canada). Since I am living in Sydney (Australia), I have never been to such a cold environment in my life. I like to start to prepare my winter clothes for this trip. Can people, who have experiences in photography in Rocky Mountains in winter period, give me some suggestions what sort of clothes I should prepare?
The workshop is a 5-day intensive photography practice in the area, we will take photographs 5-7 hours per day during the workshop period.
Many thanks,
10.
Dear Alan, Bob, JDM and Alex,

Many thanks for your input. I use Singh Ray's Vari-ND 82 mm for stops 2-4 are fine. This filter has a maximal 8 stop ND effect. But the difficulty is that anything more than 4 stops is unusable.

So I am looking for DN filters with 6 stops and if possible, even 10 stops. I think the Cokin or Lee holder-style ND filters are not suitable for my purpose due to the light leaking during a long exposure time. So screw-in filter is the solution. But I cannot find any 82mm such high stop ND filters except B+W. But B+W has stopped producing this size ND filters.

 11.

Dear all,
Currently I am using 82mm Singh Ray Vari-ND filter on my EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II lens with 5D MarkII body. However, I found most of the time, the out door shooting results (I am doing landscape photography) with this filter at more than 4 stops are not acceptable - the exposure is very uneven, the middle sky and foreground got very dark.
So I am considering to buy a fixed stop screw-in ND filter, because the reviews for fixed screw-in large stop ND filters didn't report this problem, though other problems such as color cast exist. But this always exists for all these kinds of ND filters I guess.
The two filters I am considering are B+W 82mm ND106 (6 stops) and B+W 82mm ND110 (10 stops). But I was advised by B+W that they no longer produce these 2 filters on 82mm size.
So my question is: Have some people bought any 82mm screw-in ND filters at 6 stops and 10 stops recently? Or any other suggestions?
Many thanks for your help.
