baby photography, d40, lens choices. in Mirrorless Digital Cameras Posted May 6, 2008 Hello, I currently use a compact point and shoot and am just beginning in photography. I am quickly reaching the limitations of my small digicam--I want something with a faster lens because I often want to get photos of my small children indoors (low light). I also like shooting outdoors and macro, so there are a few other lenses I will probably end up with in ten years. But I want to start with the one that will address the low light situation baby pictures. I think I want to have a nice prime lens to learn on and I want it to be fast--for indoor use. I am tempted to get the d40 and the nikon 50/1.8 lens. This way I can use the 50mm for indoors with children and I can use the kit lens for situations where I can't make the 50mm work. The reason I am thinking this is what I want is because of the dslr articles on this site. These articles say the kit lenses are junk and you should really learn on a normal prime lens. If price were no option, it would seem that an ideal setup for what I want (quality images of my children and the a good place to learn how to compose a photograph) would be a d3 with 50/1.4. Which is laughable for my budget. Is this a stupid idea of what would be nice? So I am wondering if the 50/1.8 would be too long for normal use indoors. I realize this is not a normal lens when used on the d40, but I don't have a good idea of exactly what would happen if I tried it.... I've read here that the sigma 30/1.4 is a good option. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Hello,
