1.
I am a portrait photographer and comfortable with my pricing structure for portait work, but unsure of how to price a fine art canvas.

I have a happy portrait client that has fallen in love with one of my travel images. She would like to purchase a canvas of it to be framed for her wall. My thought process is this: I've already captured the image and processed it through Photoshop, long before I met her. I think it should be priced less expensively than a similarly sized canvass from her portrait session, but not so inexpensively that it devalues my skill as an artist. Is this a reasonable line of thinking?

If my mark up on a portrait-session canvas is four times the cost I pay through my lab, for example, should I charge 2 1/2 or 3 times my cost for the fine art print?

I've never really promoted any of my travel/fine art images as they have mainly been for my personal pleasure.

Any help or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  2.
This is my first year of my part-time portrait business, working on location and making it an "experience" for the families. I am comfortable with my pricing of prints, canvasses and other wall portraits. However, I still have not resolved what to do about families wanting to use a favorite image for their holiday cards. I'd love to hear from others how you handle this. I see three options....have them order multiple 4x6 images from me (but my 4x6 price is $15 each...not exactly conducive to ordering 50!), giving them a high-quality jpeg for their own ordering (now I lose control of the quality) and order printed press cards from my vendor (I use Bay).
Any ideas/suggestions? If you use printed press cards from your vendor, how do you price them? I'm thinking that the markup might be significantly less than I use for prints and other products, and chances are, these would be an add-on to the larger, more profitable order they make with me. On the other hand, if a client wants to order 50 of the same print for holiday cards, so you price them on a sliding scale?
Thanks in advance!

  3.
I gotta ask - - and I can't be the only one who sighs to herself about it...where do you put all your photography gear, props, etc? I have it lying all over the house, much as I try to keep it together, I am always missing a backdrop, lens, PC cord, light stand etc. The more I must have, the more space it takes. I love hearing photography-organization-ideas! Anyone have the perfect solution?!

  4.
I am hoping to be able to set up a mini-studio at our club's vintage golf outing this fall, and not sure how to approach the club manager and organizers of this. Luckily, they all know me and hopefully will think this is a great idea. (These guys are all so proud of wearing their "knickers" and argyle sweaters and old clubs and I think I could be successful in producing quality sepia images of them posing - - and they all have golf themed rooms at home, no doubt!).
I assume this is similar to shooting at a gala or club event but I don't know how that works. Should I come to them with this idea and how I plan to do it, and offer to provide the club a nice matted image of the winning foursome, but be on my own to contact and sell to the members? Would a club expect more in return?
I have no idea how these things work when a photographer comes in to shoot an event or gala.
Any ideas and suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated!

  5.
All the Chianti country scenery begs for a tripod; I brought mine last year and certainly didn't regret it. While you are out and about do not forget Siena....other towns like San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Castellina, Radda in Chianti, and countryside are all lovely. I am envious. Definitely bring your 40D and all your lenses....you will get images of a lifetime, especially if you will be there that long!!

  6.
I am taking my mother to Norway in June (she's the only one patient enough to be with me while I shoot!). We want to drive from Oslo to Stavanger rather than take the train. Has anyone made this drive, and which route would you suggest? We'd like to hit a few of the Stave Churches (and the Telemark area) but not sure of the most worthwhile route. We have the ability to stay the night on the way to Stavanger so any suggestions there are appreciated. We'll be headed to Bergen after Stavanger, and that leg of my trip is all set.

  7. I just got my new 40D today (I had been using the XTi) and I can't figure out how to manually change the ISO. The manual

says that in "basic" modes (portrait, landscape, etc) the ISO is set to automatic. However, when in manual, Aperture

priority and shutter priority, it still shows as "Auto ISO" and doesn't let me change it. The comments above danced around

it, but please help.....how can I manually change my ISO when in M, AV & TV? It's driving me crazy! Thanks!
