Weighing In:
Try the following as a start:
If you can, use a key light (bounce), fill light (reflector or softlight) and back light. If you only have 1 flash, get it off the camera and bounce it. Shoot in Manual mode; shoot in RAW; adjust white balance for flash. Shoot from about 10 ft away. start off with a low ISO (200) f5.6 at 1/60. Take some sample shots and adjust your aperature first then your speed to get it right. Focus on the eyes.
Don't use "P" mode as their may not be any adjustment for contrast.
EXPERIMENT!

Competitive Camera is the BEST! Most of the pros in the DFW area use them. They are Nikon's largest dealer here and they have a lot of the things you can't find anywhere else in stock. If you go in, they are not much to look at, but they are experienced, know what they're doing and will rarely give you bad advice. And their prices are very competitive with B&H.

The contract is King...however, if they are DEMANDING money back, I would negotiate and refund 50% of what you have already received. Of course, if ther are that unhappy with the pictures, then they don't get them...why would they want them? It's give and take; but has been said the contract should cover things like this. If you have already given them the pictures and they have not returned them, the I would not give any money back. Use constitutes agreement. Good luck.
