Thanks Lenny, the chdk was what I was looking for. I'm guessing the image quality of the canon's are probably better than the trail cams, though with much less convenience. As far as subjects it would be whatever visits the pond so I'd set it to time lapse to take a few hundred shots throughout the day. At the moment there's a family of wood ducks that scoots off down a beaver canal everytime I come by. Also setting it to shoot video at intervals might produce some interesting results.

Bob, for some cameras, though I don't know which ones, you can download software that acts as an electronic intervalometer, so you can program the camera to take pictures at set intervals, or even program it so the sensor acts as a motion detector. I like the idea of mcgyvering a point and shoot so I can still use it as a point and shoot.

I'd like to set up a camera to monitor activity at my beaver pond, something like a wildlife cam but with better resolution. A local discount store has a Kodac ZD8612 IS for fairly cheap, does anyone know if this would be appropriate or could recomend another camera?

Are Macro lenses only for Macro work ?

I certainly have had that experience with the 52BB on a D90. I was surprised at how it picked out every wrinkle, pore, and blemish, every patch of dry skin on my subjects face.
If I had any idea how to use photoshop, I imagine it could be fixed fairly easily. Fantastic for Macro, but I don't think I'd ever point it at anyone over the age of 22 again.
