Im just starting as well. I love the contrast in the colors. The green background is really great for you son.

I think the photo is pretty good but the shadows around the eyes make the subjects eyes seem drab. Also the bright white on the left is distracting. I am new at this so its just an opinion. I like the intersting crop and the subtle little snowflakes.
