  1. Thanks Bob.

I was aware that it would work, it just when you spend GBP1200, you expect to have the correct kit and not have to use adapters. It was the waranty aspect that freaked me out.

    Thanks again

  2. I have just purchased a 5D on line with a company which I knew little about,

the price was good and all prices were in UK pounds. (Best Priced Brands)

However, when it arrived, the charger was wrong, it had two fold away pins

which I suspect is the US model. They did not reply to six e-mails over a four

week period but eventually did. They have messed me about somewhat rotten

saying that they will sort it, then they won't, then it's not part of their

policy to refund based on incomplete items, then assure me that the US charger

is fully compatable with the UK market. On and on this goes! Almost finally,

they said they would send me the charger, with that, I opened the camera and

began to use it with my pals charger. Now they say they won't supply the

    charger.

Anyway, the point. It has come to light that this company are not in fact in

the UK but USA. So I now realise that maybe I have a waranty issue in the fact

that Canon may not honour any waranty work in the UK.

The company have now asked me, after numerous threatening e-mails and an

acussation of gross incompetance from me, if I want to return the camera or

    have a charger sent

With all the hassle which I have already had, it would be much easier to have a

charger sent as I would be without a camera for a while again. But, would I

    have a warantee issue.

The other tempting thing is that I bought it seven days before the Canon

rebate, the company now show the camera with the GBP150 rebate. After having

the camera sit in a box for four weeks while I waited for a reply, seems like

    I'm owed some hassle money!

If you regularly read these posts, I am the guy who lost my 400D body and 70-

200mm L in a brief ducking in the sea two months ago, I just keep getting bad

    luck at the moment.

Your thoughts on the warantee would be much appreciated.

  3. I would just like to clarify to my comment above the the 20D which I bought was in it's self a lemon, not that the 20D is a lemon. That's the trouble with second hand gear.

Just another thought to put things into perspective. If the mark 11 comes out to be somewhere in the region of GBP350 higher in price, which is quite likely, that is the cost of a 580 flash gun or a great set of Lee Filters. Isn't it funny how we sometimes get blinded into thinking that several hundred pounds higher isn't too bad on an upgrade, and then hold back on other essential purchases because we've blown our budget.

  4. I've been at the same stage for a few weeks now after loosing my 400D and my 70-200 L to a brief ducking in the sea, I posted a similar query a few weeks ago as to wether I should wait for the upgraded 5D or go with the 40D (landscapes are my bag)

I have just today purchased a new 5d and eagerly await its arrival.

Although I'm sure I will look longingly at the new model when it comes out and wish I had it, the fact remains that it is likely to be at the end of the year and most cirtainly at at a higher price.

The end of the year is a long way away, nearly three seasons of beautiful images, it's a lot to miss out on!

So the bottom line after reading the replies to my post is, the 5d is a fantastic camera Now, it will be at the end of the year, and it will still be in a few years from now. The other thing that assured me is that the 5D is a good price now (although prices have climbed ahead of the rebate rumoured in March) and the mark 11 is like likely to be a few hundred pounds higher and would be a long time before it's likely to be discounted.

By the way, I first went down the route of buying a second hand 20D to put me on and it's a bit of a lemon!

  5. The 5D has many things over the used 20D which I have just bought.

Principally, the full frame lets me benifit from the 16mm L zoom which I already own as it is that very thing which I need. The other solution is to use the 20D and purchase a lower quality and slower 10-22 lens, thus saving GBP500. remembering that Landscapes are my main interests.

The 20D was purchased on a closing bid on e-bay when I still wasn't convinced that the 5D was the way to go and desparatly needed a camera to replace mine for the time being, a short term solution.

Within hours of that winning bid, i was in town and ended up with the 5D and 40D in my hand with a 16mm zoom lens, enough said and a decision was made, so the 20D is a bit surplus.

But I have now clearly realised the benifits of having the two bodies.

Firstly, I can now benifit from the crop factor on the top end of a 200mm zoom on the 20D and benifit from the full frame when using the 16mm end of my zoom.

I can benifit from the pop up flash for fill in flash on the 20D, I can feel a bit more at ease in vunerable positions with the 20D when doing night time shots in the city as I do many times or on the beach when doing costal shots (as per my reason for been in this position in the first place) and a really big one is having a second/spare body. I have been quite obsessive about my camera since I got it, never knew that I would feel like I has lost a leg since I lost it!

Then there are the frequent times I have been at an event and have to change the lenses quickly and then back, having two bodies would be great, especially if you can then avoid getting dust in the sensors with minimal changes.

Yeah, I know, these are two different cameras and that this is just a simplified statement. I first thought to then resell the 20D on, but if you read all the replies above, it all make perfect sense to have both. The more I read, the more it makes perfect sence to have a 40D and a 5D if I could squeeze out a few more hundred pounds from my account, hence keeping the second hand 20D

  6. I think that i've come to realise that full frame is where I want to be, considering that landscape is about 80 per cent of my interest. In doing so, I can avoid the purchase of a 10-20 or similar lens from either canon or sigma and use the very fine 16-35 L lens which I already own (however, I have read that there could be some problems with this lens on a full frame to confuse matters a little more)

So the matter has come down to whether I purchase the 5d now at a cost of GBP 1200 or there abouts (still neading to replace the 70-200 L lens which I've destroyed) or wait for it's replacement which is inevitable, as evolution always does.

What holds me back is that the replacement may have such nicities, which I think are important, as sensor cleaning, possibly upto 15Mp, I don't hold my breathe for a built in flash which I would miss for a bit of fill etc (due to the prism and the full frame if I understand it correctly), and a nice big rear screen (not bothered about live view)

I had the idea to buy a cheap older 20d to put me on, but they have sold for nearly GBP300 on e-bay over the last few days and of course, we've all bought donkeys at some point.

So that is the thing now, do I buy or wait. I feel that the 5D replacement may make me feel disappointed with a purchase of over a thousand pounds on the old one, and having looked at the second hand market, it's a little scary. Maybe it makes sense to puchase another 400D to put me on and then get the big one in late winter. With no other FF on the market in this price, why would Canon release an upgrade when they don't need to, so who knows when that will be. Maybe I would be totally happy with the superb 40D and an additional lens.

I guess you can tell that i'm running around in circles confused, at the same time, I have no camera and the mountains of the Lake District are beconning me with the frost and snow.

When I decided to go digital last May, I had a budget which I have increased five fold as I've progressed unexpectedly. I didn't bank on this and I'm scared of these escalating costs. If anyone reading this can learn one thing, insurance is a must.

So thanks again to all who have replied, I find myself with new conclusions every hour. Maybe it's the reality of having no camera, I feel like I have lost a limb!

  7. I thank you all for your time and answers.

Just had a call to say that the camera and lens are both beyond repair, ah well! The lens, by the way, was just a standard F4 version, still, thats GBP 5oo plus GBP 400 for the body.

The bad news about the lens may stear me now to a 40d, but i'm not going to commit for another week, I believed up to today that the 5D was the way forward and I could just about justify the GBP 1200 for the body. Now however, I have to replace a 70-200 L as well.

So thank you everyone, you've all made an excellent case in each direction. I'll spend the next week chewing it over.

I may still look at a s/h 20d and wait. But with spring, summer and into autumn I guess without the best available pixels, I have a lot to miss by waiting. It just dosen't seem worth it to climb those mountains and fells, and then to capture it at a lower res than I could do. Sleepless nights ahead I think!

  8. Hi everyone, my first time here.

I have dropped my 400d and my 70-200L zoom very briefly into the sea (It was

seconds and shallow, but enough to cover it)

The camera is dead, but the lens (once dried) had sand under both the zoom and

the focus rings. The internal fogged up for a few days but began to clear. They

were sent off to the repairer who say its gone to Canon and an estimate will

take three weeks due to backlog.

Looking at this forum, it seems clear that the camera probably wont survive,

but I am hopeful that the lens won't cost a great deal to repair.

They were not insured by the way.

So here is my question now that I have stopped been sick!

    I have a 16-35 L and a 24-105 L lens but feel the need for a 10mm zoom. If I

get a 40d (which in the uk can now be had for ?670) I would have to spend ?500

for the canon 10mm zoom or the Sigma, which is ?280. This then brings me close

    to a 5D body, which I could get for ?1200....where I wouldn't need a 10mm lens

as it is a full frame and my 16-35mm would then cover that range. But, is it

worth hanging on to see if the 5D is upgraded soon.... and am I right in

assuming that my 16-35 will handle this range on a 5D without any problems? If

I would have to wait a while, I could get a second hand 20d for ?150-?200

Put simply, should I get a 40d or a 5D...or should I wait to see if the 5d

updates soon and buy a cheap body to put me on.

    Any thoughts?

I shoot mainly landscapes and a bit of architecture, but I also use the top end

of the 200mm zoom and benifit from the crop factor for some minority interest

    and some landscape isolation shots.

    Your comments would be appreciated

    Andy

I cannot seem to get my British sterling symbols to work, they are shown as a

question mark on this page, sorry.
