  1. Just recently I broke out a hard drive that had some old photos on it.  The photo was from 2007 on the BRP. It looked pretty good so I clicked on the RAW file to start the PP. It was a little crooked so I did what you do to straighten and it straightend just fine but left faint verticle lines throughout the entire photo. I hit undo and the lines disappeared and it went back to being crooked.  I have never had this problem editing any other photo so I assume the photo is no longer any good.

So, just how long will a photo last on a hard drive that is kept in storage? This photo has not been on this HD since 2007.  It was first put on a 500GB HD. Later it was moved to a 1TB drive and again later moved to a 2TB drive. It is on 2 other HD's and I have not checked those drives yet. But, the picture on the HD in question is no longer workable.

Also, the photo in question was taken with a Nikon D200. It seems like all of my old photos taken with the D200 have not aged well. I do not know if that has anything to do with it. Obviously I need to fix this problem for future photos so any pointers will be appreciated.

PS- I keep all of my photos on 3.5 internal HD's which I hook up to computer via a single or dual bay drive. The Hard drives are stored in Orico padded cases. They pretty much stay at temps between 68-74.

  2. Never use live view, I guess it is more like one second. Right after I take a shot I can say 0ne Mississippi, before the shot comes up. I am using Sandisk Extreme. I also use my CF as main card and SD as Backup. And I shoot RAW uncompressed.
  3. I have had my new, used D800E for about a month and I am loving it. There is just one thing that bugs me and I think I know the answer but just want to make sure. With every other camera I own when I take a shot it instantly appears on my LCD. With the D800E, it takes 1-2 seconds before it shows on the LCD. Is this just a normal lag due to the 36MP sensor, or have I got a problem?

    Thanks

  4. Derek, B&H should take care if for you. My returns of new and used items have always been honored. I have returned a well used, not refurbed, camera to Adorama many years ago that was just too beaten up for my taste but was otherwise functioning fine. They took it back without batting an eye. I am surprised that the refurb is busted. If you buy another used body you might ask their staff to go over it for you prior to shipping. KEH has gone over gear for me when I have asked about it. Good hunting.

B&H has wonderful customer service. I had an RMA 2 hours after posting here. I had looked into KEH but they will not tell you how many shutter actuation's the body has on it. There is no way I am paying $900.00 for a D800 with 200,000. shots on it. They say it does not matter, I think it does.

  5. I want a good landscape camera but much to poor to afford currant models. So I first tried a used Nikon D800E used. I bought this camera from the most reputable dealer in the US, It had a crack in the body. From where the crack was, easy to see it fell lens first onto hard surface. I sent it back and decided to go with the D810, refurbished. Got it yesterday, it will not read ANY CF cards. I will be sending it back today.

So just wondering about this K-1. How is this body as far as dependability. Is the shutter as strong as a Nikon, will it last 200,000 shots. If something breaks on it after warranty expires, can I buy the parts and fix it myself. Nikon does not sell parts, other than exterior parts.

Also, what is a good wide angle lens for this. I shoot waterfalls, lakes, mountain vistas and astrophotography.

    Thanks

  6. Thanks Derek. It sounds like you have pretty thoroughly checked that D810. It is time to ship it back to B&H.

I am a bit surprised by your used D800E experience. I assume B&H would at least do some checking and testing; they shouldn't miss a major crack unless it was described in the condition of the camera.

    I agree.

  7. Yeah will be sending it back. The whole thing started 3+ weeks ago when I bought a used D800E from B&H. The camera they sent me had a 3/4" crack in the front above lens mount where screw is. Easy to see it was caused by front impact from previous owner. Notified them of it immediately. I actually ordered the D810 a day before B&H even refunded my money from the 800E. I am done with it, was not meant to be.

  8. Just got my new reurbished D810. Put a brand new SD card in, then a brand new CF card in and got an Error on the CF card. Tried 3 other CF cards, got errors on all. Any ideas?
  9. I am thinking about purchasing one of these two systems. I am just worried about the polarizing filter that comes with each. So if anyone out there uses either of these systems can you tell me how you feel about the polarizing filter. I have heard that the Nisi uses plastic instead of glass on the polarizing filter. That I can not do. Being that both products are made and designed in China I am guessing that the Haida would be about the same as the Nisi. So please let me know how you feel about the polarizing filter,

    Thanks,

    Derek

  10. I am trying to figure out what bulbs to use for continuous lighting setup. I thought this was going to be easy, just get some 5500k LED corncob style bulb and be done with it. Those bulbs get horrible reviews! They are quite exspensive and do not last long. The bulbs will either go into soft boxes or behind umbrellas and used for product photography.

So please tell me what has worked well for you, I appreciate any help.

    Derek

  11. A real estate firm wants to use one of my images on their web page. I used the Getty Images calculator and it came out to $1,400 a year $840 for one month. Seems a little high. I am wondering if anyone has done something similer and what they charged?

    Thanks for any help,

    Derek

  12. Going to Moab Utah next week. We will be hitting Arches, Canyonlands and Capital Reef. We want to spend some time there at night as well and I am just wondering how crowded these parks are at night? Not just the begining of October but June/July as well. Thanks!
  13. The 11 TB (5 and 6, respectively) drives are hooked up all the time to the main computer and backups are done by Apple's Time Machine. In addition i have a bunch of of Western Digital USB drives that I back up to at longer intervals and keep in safe place(s).

So you are saying that you have (2) external hard drives, one 6TB and one 5TB. And, you keep a third copy of each image on a WD USB? Are your external drives like the WD Passport or did you purchase an internal drive and install it in a external Enclosure? I take it Apple Time Machine is some sort of software used to copy the images to the Hard Drives. I have always just physically downloaded my pictures to each hard drive from my desktop. I use to keep a third copy on DVD. I am now thinking about keeping a third copy on an SSD Drive. They have really come down in price over last couple of years.

  14. I am curious what the less fortunate hobbyist here do to save their photos? Over the last several years I have built up to 4 hard drives. I started with 2-500 GB hard drives, one drive being a mirror image. After filling up those drives I bought a pair of 1 TB drives, again, one is a duplicate or mirror. All of my drives are internal and are installed in some McCally Hard Drive Enclosures.

Anyway, I went back to one of my older drives to retrieve some photos and noticed it was working pretty slow. So, I bought a 2 TB drive and plan on keeping both of my 1 TB units, thus retiring the older 500 GB drives. I plan on putting all of my photos on the 2 TB and duplicating that drive with the two 1 TB drives. At the moment the weakest part of the system is the McCally Hard Drive Enclosures. Three of the enclosures are old 2.0 USB, while one is more up to date 3.0 USB and SATA. So I am considering changing from the enclosure to a single or dual bay dock. Or, maybe a simple usb 3.0 hard drive converter cable. When not in use I will store the hard drives in some anti static cases.

Really curious what works best for you guys, unless you have a $2000.00 Drobo? And, if any of you just keep it as simple as a dock/hdd cable?

    Thanks,

  15. I appreciate all of the responses folks. The only question that my son and I have is how well the Sigma 18-35mm Art works with the D3400. I have read numerous times that third party lenses have issues focusing on Nikon bodies.

The concerts he shoots are small local bands.and he is always at the front of the stage. I think the biggest band he has ever shot was a group called "Atilla" and "The Plot in You". Bands that not many folks over the age of 25 have ever heard of. He is so close that he has to wipe sweat from the front element several times a show. He uses the 18-55mm kit lens, which has produced some great shots at a max. f/3.5. The problem is, he does not like using the flash. He feels it is disrespectful. The Sigma lens seems perfect for this, giving him a couple more stops. He is 17 years old, we are not going to break the bank for his hobby. We spoil him with love, not material things. This will be a combined parents/grand parents gift. Also, he is a bit on the skinny side but strong none the less. I put my Nikon 16-35mm f/4 on his body just to give him an idea of what it will feel like. He had no issue with that. In fact he liked it.

So the only question is how well the D3400 and Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 mate up? We really appreciate any help you all can give us.

  16. He is hoping to get this lens for Birthday/Christmas. Possibly upgrade camera body to a D7200/D7400 for graduation, if his aunts/uncles and everyone else treats him well. It took me years before I went FX, he will have to do that on his own. Regardless, we know it is a heavy lens. I just want to make sure it focuses well with the D3400. It will be a refurbished lens.
