  1. Hi guys;

    I'm pretty new at all this, and I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for

    here. I generally shoot in available light (if you look at my gallery at

    http://www.photo.net/photos/Nexus6, no flashes or external lights were used), and I

    get by okay - but I think I might need to start moving up in the world and get

    some lighting experience. There are times when I think it might come in handy.

    I always work alone, no assistant or anything, and generally in places where I

    can't be hauling a lot of gear. What would you guys suggest for a quick and

    dirty lighting setup (as small as possible - on-camera would be fantastic) for

    this sort of thing?

    Thanks!

    Josh

  2. Maybe I don't know a lot compared to many users on here, but here's my two cents:

    I started out with a 300D, and took _many_ pictures with it which I would consider excellent. Sure, there are some issues with that camera (mostly speed and the fact that paying customers don't take you seriously because it's silver - sad, but true), but that doesn't mean it doesn't take great images. As people have said, a lot of the battle is in the glass and in the knowledge of the photographer.

    Later, I upgraded to a 20D which I purchased from a friend of mine who is a professional photographer - in turn, he purchased the 5D. All I have to say is, I enjoy the speed of the 20D, but the actual image quality is pretty much the same. As for my friend with the 5D, he has commented to me that he's not sure why he upgraded, as it's (I quote) "just like a 20D with bigger file-sizes, basically." Sure, he can crop more, etc - but he's not noticing a huge image difference.

    So, the long and the short of it is, yeah - it's better to own a 5D I guess, and there must be some situations where it will make a difference (the 85 1.2, for example), but in general you should be fine with any camera body. I'm sure you would love a 40D or 30D. Sometimes I miss my old 300D, but the newer cameras are so much faster.
