  1. Tom, I try not to fill my cards to capacity when I shoot. It was certainly not the case when this happened. At the time there were about 30-40 pictures on an 8 GB card. Not qite even a nibble in its capacity. I do delete pictures while I am shooting. I was unaware that this posed a problem.....
  2. Tom,

I do regularly format my card, but you lost me after a minute due to my layman vocabulary. If indeed it is a card issue, I would love to know what kind of cards people are using now, successfuly. I have always used sandisk and lexar. This is the first time that I have even considered that there may be an issue with one of my cards other than it is not large enough for a less cluttered day shoot.

  3. William, I am not using the verical grip. So it is not the same problem with the battery terminals that you were having. I am glad that all it took was a good drying to resolve.

Josh, Hopefully it is a firmware issue, but it is a bit off that we with these issues are seemingly far and few between. I have not had a repeat though since it happened a few nights ago.

Steve, most likely it is not the card. It is a SanDisk Extreme IV 8GB. If you know of any issues with the card, I would be more than attentive. Hard/Firm/Software issues are much less heartbreaking when it is not your main workhorse.

Thank you gentlemen for your time.

    Miles

  4. Fred,

This one is more like total paralysis. The only thing that works without turning the camera off is hitting the playback button. It happened for the first time last night while I was taking pictures RAW @ ISO 1600, 3200 and 6400. The picture count was about 40 when this happened, but when it happened, it happened about 5 times in 2 minutes like I had said. I am not sure what other details I could give to see if you could recall what the circumstances were when your playback gave up on you and if they were similar.

  5. Are there any D700 owners out there that are having this issue? I will roll through my pictures on playback and the

frame will freeze. I can not scroll, delete or check the metadata of the photo. The way I have been remedying this is

pressing the play button to get the black screen then play again to get back to normal playback activities. This

happened about 5 times in 2 minutes.

Firmware issue??? If so I hope nikon has a solution... I would hate to not have my baby for a few weeks for

something small and annoying that could be solved online.

  6. Jerry Gardner,

Hey man.. Do you see all the hype that is going on here. This is what is preventing you from getting the honest

answere you deserve. It happens to me alot here. I am a Nikon guy so my camera judgement will be a bit biased

and lopsided towards Nikon since as camera owners we all want to be vindicated in spending the small fortunes that

we do on our professions and obsessions.

Getting to my point. I am a young photographer who has hardly the experience of some of the guys who have

posted in this thread, so I will not take away from thier individual prowesses they hold in our world. When it comes

to shooting something that I would like to have printed in the dimentions that you speak of I still go with film. I will

proof and plan with digital and sometimes use my D700 or 200 for enlargements over 8x10. But when you need that

kind of resolution with the minimum amount of loss across the sprectrums we scruitinize over, 35mm slide film still

holds a higher resolution than both of the camera choices that you have offered once scanned if you insist on using a

    digital workflow thereafter.

I would say that using film for the time being for your larger prints is still a more than adequate medium for landscape

and fine art reguardless of what other people tell you you absolutely have to have on the 28th of november 2008.

Good luck to you Jerry. Happy holidays.

  7. Thank you Paul. Alot of I cans but no here's how. I apprecialte the input. I have noticed that the better the exposure the more reduced the noise is. I wish that I didn't have to be so concerned with the nuances while I am getting shots on the fly though. Again thanks.

Here's one more example of extreme. This was me and the boys a few nights ago on a gun run.

    Shot is handheld @ 12800 w/ 80-400 VR @400mm

  8. I am not getting the High ISO results that I expected from my D700. I have toyed with the High ISO NR, but 3200

and above are not all that is advertised. What are the D700 users out there doing to achieve virtually noiseless 3200

and 6400 ISO photographs? Please Please help me keep the faith.

Other than this, the D700 is the best camera I have held in my hot little hands, it far outperforms my D200. I am not

bitching about the upgrade. I love my camera.

  9. Just purchased the D700 yesterday and feeling a bit overwhelmed. I have been shooting with the D200 for a little

over 2 years. I started thumming through the shooting menus to get set up but found myself scratching my head a

bit, the users manual was no more helpful than the ? button on the camera itself. I also purchased the 14-24 2.8 for

some good use of the FX format. I would like to shot some landscape and I am wondering what kind of tweaks the

experienced users are sticking with. Just need some pointers. So if there is any advice from D700 USERS, it would

    be greatly appreciated.

*Please do not turn this post into a comparison between cameras of new or old or of a different brand. I just want

some sound interactive technical advice on the D700.*
